A related hatred I have is the mockery of Boebert for getting her GED. There are SO many excellent reasons to mock her, but that's such a stupid one. It's the one thing I can actually respect her for. Focusing on the credentials rather than the batshittery is aggravating in the extreme.
A text IS its misreadings as well as its correct readings, especially with something like Star Trek, which facilitates its misreadings even if it doesn't validate them.
Are these fans inconsistent readers, willful readers, poor readers, misreaders? Yes, especially in some of the non-ST examples I mention.
Do I have trouble identifying with these fans? Yes.
Do I think they are "real" fans? Sadly, yes.
That they ARE fans, even if they are selective in their fanship. Even if that fanship requires reading for what is arguably secondary as opposed to what it arguably primary (the woke).
And the list goes on and on.
I'm hesitant to call these fans "fake" fans, simply because in some cases (like ST) there are so many OTHER reasons ppl could be fans: monsters, scantily-clad women for Kirk to teach "this Earth thing called kissing," cool tech, grandly imagined scenes, etc.
Those kinds of misreadings are so common across genres, different forms of media (Nabokov is the champion of the pedophile; Neil Young really does want us to ignore things and keep on rockin' in the free world; "Born in the USA" is uncritical patriotic rock; Rorschach is a good guy in Watchmen)
With my heart and with my head, I 100% agree: the woke has been there from the beginning. To not see it is a product of a willful way of reading, a willful way of being a fan, a willful blindness about the product one claims to be a fan of.

This is true. But I would add that the Klingons and Romulans articulate justifications for what we'd consider not good by appealing to tradition, culture, realpolitik. The Empire pays lip service to "Order" as a principle, I guess, but they pretty much validate viewing them as the bad guys.
