i think the biggest fundamental Thing turn-based rpg devs can do to improve their combat is to consider turn economy. there's a lot deeper nuance you could take into this, but on the surface level, everyone who's played an older game has felt this:

If you see few games being announced or games not being what you expected - you can blame the massive layoffs that have occurred in the last 2.5 years
Itโs incredibly noticeable how often โand an army of outsourcers outside America and Western Europeโ is left out of these team sizes. Thatโs the part I find real uncomfortable.
The perception of cheaply made games by like 1 dude minus all the contractors that blow up hurts us because when we ask for a real budget, someone says "well I saw an article that this other game cost $60K to make and sold 1 million copies" and that ends the convo
there is something intangibly gross in how asian features are so frequently used for artificial, machine personas
it's almost as if in popular imagination asian features are associated with a sort of controllable autonomous programming, but no soul.
