Nashville Noticias staffer Estefany Rodríguez was detained by ICE in South Nashville on Wednesday morning. There was no warrant for her arrest. Her attorneys have filed an emergency petition in federal court seeking a writ of habeas corpus, or an immediate review of whether or not her detention is legal. Rodríguez, who was in the car with her husband — a U.S. citizen — has been following all the legal steps to citizenship. In her job, Rodríguez has reported several stories that hold ICE accountable, and it’s unclear whether her detention was retaliation. As of Thursday afternoon, she was in Alabama en route to an ICE processing center in Louisiana.

Sure, but mass market newspapers weren’t profitable for the vast majority of their history. They started as ways for the wealthy to share trading info and gossip, and for the wealthy to get their political views out to voters

The market never wanted to support large-scale news gathering, it was always subsidized by the monopoly of distribution channels. Advertisers / people paying to post classifieds always brought in more than readers and didn’t care about investigative journalism and foreign bureaus

Independent news is wonderful and absolutely should be supported but isn't a replacement for large news organizations. e.g. you lose CNN, you lose reporters on the ground in Ukraine. That's the biggest danger to this Warner takeover, IMO
