As a cyclist I’ve found it’s a great way to inoculate myself to rules of the road comments from drivers by just asking “how many stop signs have you rolled today, because I know the answer isn’t zero”

"What ultimately broke me and my Blizzard career was I got called into the CFO's office and he sits me down and he says—he gives me a date which at the time was 2020 and was going to slip to 2021, but at the time it was 2020—and he said: 'Overwatch has to make [redacted] in 2020, and then every year after that it needs a recurring revenue of [redacted]' and then he says to me 'if it doesn't do [redacted] we're going to lay off 1,000 people, and that's going to be on you.' And that was the biggest fuck you moment I've had in my career, it felt surreal to be in that condition."

The Culture series by Iain M. Banks is one for one in predicting that "knife missile" drones would basically be the end-all be-all of warfare in the future

Dildo conclusion to a dildo piece.

"You are either an idiot or a genius"
"You can recognize great human writing - which is clunky and mistaken btw"
"Human idiosyncracies and personal taste are errors the wonderful machine can iron out"

Not even a good dildo. This silly plastic thing got No Veins.

Reading positive things about Marathon really puts Highguard into high contrast because the only nice thing I read about that game was from an article that said it felt like football. Which struck me as a strange compliment

catching up with what's gone into the National Film Registry recently, which I used to be fascinated by. I find it interesting when a film gets in within its first one or two years of eligibility, which happens ten years after its initial release. For 2025, Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) made it in

Maybe they relied on AI to pick targets. But they bombed the school twice, hitting it again 40 minutes after the initial strike, in order to kill survivors and first responders. The mere *existence* of AI means no one has to be held responsible for this crime against humanity

This is elite signaling, the rich exurbs pretend to be rural by doing conspicuous consumption of being rural and the actual rural areas follow them as taste makers. It’s also why they look down on cities even though they don’t live in one and what happens there doesn’t matter to them at all.

Al Jazeera cracked this "enigma":

This school had many daughters of military officers and soldiers. The idea was to attract them to the school, strike it to draw in rescuers and relatives, and then strike it again to kill them.

THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!

Remember when my gonads weren’t producing hormones and my brain wasn’t even halfway to being fully formed? When mommy packed my lunch and I was in daily contact with my community through schooling? Thats the last time things were good for me

And some ways of framing it push a modicum of guilt onto the audience for being turned off by all the intangibles (and tangibles), but like, what other plan was there? I don’t wish that the game had been good, I wish they didn’t make it. It is so fundamentally misdirected.

I know it’s sad in a way but it’s hard to see it that way. Devs worked hard? Yeah, they worked hard to make a really bad idea come to life. Nobody in charge was invested in making something good. That’s how it looks. Spending a bunch of money just to spend it. What it feels like is waste.
