He claimed he lied to the ranger to avoid triggering a military investigation into a potential friendly fire incident. No medical or military records have been produced to verify the combat wound, and critics including the ranger and a former SEAL have questioned his account.
Sheehy later denied that he shot himself in 2015, saying instead that he fell during a hike and sought medical attention because the bullet from Afghanistan may have become dislodged.
However, a 2015 incident at Glacier National Park complicates this story: Sheehy told a park ranger, Kim Peach, that he accidentally shot himself in the arm when his gun discharged while loading it in a vehicle. He paid a $525 fine for illegally discharging a firearm in the park.
