This week I saw Purpose and John Proctor is the Villain on Bway. Both are fantastic plays (and yes, tix are expensive but not Othello-expensive). It was especially thrilling to hear audiences gasp, cheer, groan, scream their approval or disapproval; these plays have plots that people 100% invest in!
The stars of the rollicking musical farce “Operation Mincemeat,” about a British-intelligence ruse during the Second World War, test their own espionage abilities.
“Operation Mincemeat,” still delightfully smart and capering on Broadway, hits differently here and now.
Each mention of democracy or reminder of fascism. The not-so-teasing question about whose side we’re on. The female characters who know their heroism will be erased.
Those bits can pierce you.
Since debuting in London in 2019, “Operation Mincemeat,” which opened on Broadway last week, has won plaudits for turning wartime espionage into a satirical musical.
For descendants of the real life figures depicted onstage, it has also unearthed family secrets.
