Len Greer (pictured on right), a member of ILWU Local 10, played a key role in the 1934 West Coast waterfront strike, a turning point in dockworker labor relations. He helped shape the ILWU into a strong opponent of racial discrimination and a champion of working people.
Oscar Robertson was the @thenbpa.bsky.social president from 1965 to 1974, becoming the first African American to head a major US sports union. During his presidency, he fought to secure players’ right to choose where to play through free agency.
Dora Lee Jones helped found the Domestic Workers Union in Harlem in 1934. She fought to end domestic slavery and raise unfairly low wages for nannies, cooks, and household staff. The union eventually affiliated with @seiu.org.
Bill Chester (pictured on right) became the ILWU’s first African American International officer when he was elected International VP in 1969. In the 1950s, he helped organize Black and Mexican American cotton compress workers in California’s Central Valley into the union.
Rosina Corrothers Tucker was a force in both labor and civil rights. She helped found the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and its International Ladies’ Auxiliary, organizing porters’ wives to collect dues, share information, and uplift morale.
A labor & civil rights champion, A. Philip Randolph was a founder & president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters – the first African American labor union. In 1955, he was elected VP of the @aflcio.org, where he fought for desegregation in the labor movement.
This #BlackHistoryMonth, we honor Black labor leaders whose tireless work shaped workers’ rights. The labor movement we know today stands on the foundation they built.
