How specific are heritable symbioses?
And what can we learn from swapping obligate symbionts across host species?
We address this in our latest, led by @inespons.bsky.social & in our collaboration w/ @microbiome.bsky.social ๐ฆ ๐ชฒ Out today in @natcomms.nature.com!

Happy birthday to one of my favourite haters, Charles Darwin
The Nowak-Epstein emails reminded us about the genius summary of that strange paper, which has better stood the test of time ๐ youtube.com/watch?v=oE6I...
Some very juicy emails in these files also - especially like this absolute belter from Bob Trivers
Strange discovery that an email about inclusive fitness was forwarded to Jeffrey Epstein, with the emailer quoting Jerusalem and comparing themself to Einstein. Are you one of the >100 evolutionary biologists now in the Epstein files? www.justice.gov/epstein/file...
Combined anthropogenic stressors (warming and fungicide) synergistically reduce soil microbial ecosystem functioning (respiration, metabolic capacity, plant performance, fungicide resistance). A tour-de-force by @kelbrick.bsky.social!

๐จ4-year fully funded PhD in the lab of @magicmicrobe.bsky.social (& collaborating with me!): How does iron availability shape the ability of pathogens to invade the gut microbiome?

^^^ I am in the same boat right now since Sept and absolutely feel your pain! work efficiency is at an all time high, standards at an all time low. They will have immune systems of steel soon though, right?
Wrapping up 2025 with my favourite Dublin hike, the sea cures all!
@jpjhall.bsky.social starts the #MicroEvo25 strong! Looks like it's gonna be fun๐งฌ๐งซ๐งช

๐๏ธ EMPSEB31 is heading to the mountains!
This year weโll meet in Oberwiesenthal, Germany (8โ12 June 2026), a quiet mountain town in the Ore Mountains, right on the Czech border. Think forest trails, open skies, and fresh air.
Join us for a week of science and fun!๐ฟ

Do you teach #rstats? Do your students complain about how lame and old-fashioned dplyr is? Don't worry: I have the solution for you: github.com/hadley/genzp....
genzplyr is dplyr, but bussin fr fr no cap.
๐ Applications for the tenure-track illuminate global challenge fellowships at Queenโs are now open!
Comes with 5 years protected research time, a PhD studentship, & 60k start-up. I had one of these before getting my FLF, happy to chat to anyone interested!

I'm v excited to be recruiting a PhD student to work on badger behaviour and ecology! Starting date is March 2026; see the ad here, or message me for more details: www.gregalbery.me/s/March-2026...
This looks great but it's behind a paywall (!), would anyone like to send me a pdf? www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Dublin is looking especially radiant this evening, maybe itโs the tenure? Thanks Trinity! ๐๐
Congratulations Rachel!
Delighted to share that Iโve been awarded a Future Leaders Fellowship to investigate the impact of microbial interactions on antimicrobial resistance evolution ๐ ๐งซ really grateful for this investment in my lab and excited to start my fellowship in Janโ26!

A teal flyer for a PhD opportunity to investigate how warming may change antimicrobial resistance. The project will use experiments on Klebsiella bacteria to answer questions about how temperature affects their response to antibiotics, plasmid transfer, and fitness costs. The research involves microbiology lab work, bioinformatics, and mathematical modeling. The flyer includes contact details for Dr. Daniel Padfield and the logos of the sponsoring institutions.
I have an MRC-funded PhD project available (www.exeter.ac.uk/study/fundin...) on how warming will change the problem of AMR. Join a small and friendly group (padpadpadpad.netlify.app/about) in (sometimes) sunny Cornwall. ๐งช๐ฆ #microsky

We have a position for an Assist Prof in Microbial Genomics in our School of III.
Hod Joan Geoghegan will be happy to field questions if you are interested. No specific area of microbial genomics preferred so please do consider it

This was the paper I was trying to remember last night, it looks great - look forward to getting stuck in!
Heading home after #ESEB2025. Head is melted but inspired by all of the incredible science. Was great to present our work (mostly by the brilliant @kelbrick.bsky.social) on evolution in multistressor environments, and of course to reconnect with old friends and colleagues from across Europe!
