SPN or: Let's defeat the apocalypse by starting a new one!

Dean Winchester must be a really good chef! I mean if even SAM of all people goes back to the kitchen to fetch the BURGER before they go on a hunt, it must be REALLY REALLY tasty!

O My Goodness! I need to visit you 😍

And I have luckily my niche fandoms with some problematic canonical, semi-canonical and non-canonical wlw ships

11 hours ago 2 0 0 0

And a female-female dynamic characterized of this possesiveness is... well, not that frequent.

But another of my fandoms did it, too... and I'm hooked

Don't get me wrong: Of course this all is not set in stone and you can see two men or two women in reversed dynamics, too. But that's not what usually happens in most movies and shows and subtext depends on the composition of the media in question.

That scene is imo the strongest subtext moment of them and it's not because Lucille is mentoring younger Edith on butterflies. The bending/breaking of the rule is when she touches Edith with the butterfly. It's intimidating and possessive while also being intensly sensual. And it's *not* soft.

If Lucille had treated Edith with the same closeness of sharing feelings and thoughts that brings subtext into a lot of mlm ships, it would have fallen under the radar.

But what Lucille actually does is something different:

Due the lack of the examples on silver platter it took me a while to figure out examples of female subtext. But I think one thing that works is a certrain portion of agression and possessiveness in female-female interaction

As I'm wrote a bit for Lucille/Edith lately, I will take them as an example

But two women who are typical representatives of a homosocial female space in TV and movies that follows the societal exceptions of how women treat other don't have the same effect. They do what everyone does. They are within the scope

= no subtext

19 hours ago 2 0 1 0

Like the homosocial male spaces in TV and movies and even books are often characterized by "we don't talk about inner worlds" and "body contact is rough and short"

So two characters who *usually* fit that description, but can get really melodramatic with each other fall outside the scope

= subtext

meaning that mlm and wlw subtext often differ, depending on gender expectations

So for example it's much more accepted and even expected for women to be more open about sharing thoughts and feelings as well as having soft, platonic body contact then it is for men

And that often reflects in media

Another "problem", if you want to call it so, is that my shipping antennas usually only react when there is some kind of subtext on top of the character types and story roles.

However, subtext often is a play of subtly breaking/bending social expectations and roles. And those are often gendered...

Erm, my post is probably just a response to the first you saw. There seems to be something on tumblr. I didn't see it, but seeing the vent post about it just stirred up some memory. Anti-fujoshi discourse is a national sport on bird app. And I've been on bird app for years.

I had no personal encounters so far, because the fandoms I write wlw in are too niche. But if I would get a penny for everytime I saw some of them complain that is was "the wrong kind of ship" when a wlw ship actually got some popularity, I would have a nice sum

20 hours ago 7 0 1 0

But somehow they also don't seem to like it when people with similar preferences actually ship that stuff in wlw.

So what the heck do they want?

The whole "discourse" is all: "O, you center men! Fucking start shipping wlw! And no, don't ship wlw, keep that nasty stuff to your disgusting mlm!"

20 hours ago 10 1 2 0

I said this before and I will say it again: It's not my fault that media doesn't deliever that kind of psychologically messy, unhinged, abusive, problematic and socially clueless characters and dynamics I prefere to ship on a silver platter when it come to female characters...

20 hours ago 11 1 2 1

Like yes, if somebody says: "female characters are annyoing, because women are just boring and stupid" then yes, this is misogynistic. But that is a matter of REASONING, not preference!

I hate how this "centering men" accusation over simply liking (a) mlm ship(s) overshadows some real issues with fandom misogyny that should be more reflected on as well as discourse and cause study on the complex reasons of why wlw is not as frequent as mlm.

20 hours ago 12 0 1 0

everyone who comes up with that take over simply liking a mlm ship owes the readers a full disclosure of their fic reading/writing history

Girl, I mean GIRL. Because we don't center men here ^^
