No pursue (oddly, it's a word I tend to use) so I've gone with 'follow'. Ella and Hannah are discussing their new neighbour, and Ella makes the first inroads into a theme of the story I'm calling "found feminism" 😆

Same! I'm more attached to their story arc than I am to Ella's to be honest: it's a more satisfying and less complex romance and, because Hannah has no family or dependents, she can much more easily break away from, and go on to challenge, their society's expectations

Hannah will find feminism much more rapidly (maybe even violently) than Ella: her lower social status makes her more easily victimised, and that incident at the school is a very powerful motivator in the lessons Maqine has been giving her about self-sufficiency and rejecting oppression

Yep, this is the second scene of the novel. Hannah is still perfectly accepting of her societal position of a woman on the bottom rung of gentility, and hasn't yet processed any inklings she might have about her own sexuality because of her culture's complete denial of anything not heteronormative

In dwarven society, mining is about as respectable a job as one can hold, especially as it goes hand in hand with underground architecture. The elves live in a more egalitarian society where all contributions are considered valuable to the collective, and respectability isn't really a thing

The setting of #Ellamir is pre-industrial, but only just - most raw materials are obtained through trade. Humans trade with dwarves a lot - they exchange produce and textiles for mined materials such as iron, but whether this is sustainable in even the near future is in doubt

At this point, Ella's feminism seems to be limited to women "of substance" but I'm happy to say that socio-economic bias will be eroded as the novel continues...
