His apprentice was ready to go home to his amazing wife. But the fisherman wanted to beat the record set by the previous day and refused to turn the boat around. The choppy ocean kicked the boat around like a can as the cold rain whipped the men’s faces like so many branches pulled back on a hike. As the fisherman was about to pull up his last netful, the waves finally tossed him over the edge of the boat. His apprentice caught him, but even hands sticky with fish guts could not overcome the force of the gale! The apprentice felt the master’s fingers slip through his grasp. The fisherman said to himself, “I don’t want to die. I haven't caught enough fish at all.” But he knew this was the end. Moments later, he opened his eyes. “I lived!,” he said. But his voice was caught in a net of needly teeth. Surrounded by darkness, a light bobbed just in front of his face, no matter where he turned. PANEL 3: (inset in a larger panel) One reporter is whispering to another. REPORTER: "Kent is such an off-putting sociopath" REPORTER 2: "I hope he kills himself". I was asked to draw the cover for my hometown's magazine commemorating the Segavecchia festival, a celebration of Spring of likely pagan origins held yearly halfway through Lent, and codified in the 1450s.
