5 minutes on the Edinburgh cycle network and this is what you can hear. Wrens were particularly noisy this morning - but no Goldfinches, Blue Tits or Blackbirds which I usually spot.
I'm using the Merlin Bird ID app, with my phone attached to my handlebar.
21 East Crosscauseway, built around 1778 on what is now a side street but was then the only paved road in the south of Edinburgh, which linked the city’s two main roads south. (The name comes an unfortunate anglicisation of the Scots word "causey", meaning "paved".)
Former residents include:
Currently having a coffee in John Lewis and can count 19 illegally parked cars at Elm Row.
I'm glad that's not my commute any more. I think I'd have cracked by now.
A "floating bus stop" with cycle lanes infront and behind. Behind the bus stop is pavement which is covered in parked cars, which also block the painted crossing point
An exhibit for the floating bus stop discourse 🧐
Another casualty as another car hits another bus stop. Almost as if the real safety issue at bus stops isn’t the schemes to make them accessible for school kids to pass on bikes.
We have over 2,000 cyclists a day passing the Omni Centre bus stops - if they were as dangerous as some suggest then the paper would be full of stories of people getting badly injured. The same for Leith Walk - a significant *reduction* in pedestrian casualties now the trams and cycle lanes are in.
Elm Row "cycle" lane.
Final stats for the Omni Centre cycle lane in 2025: a slight 1% increase on 2024 with 580,000 journeys; a new record set of 2,265 cyclists on Friday, 7th November.
The significant increase in numbers in prior years came after the development of cycling infrastructure on Leith Walk.
This one was so long it went into the rim and nearly bounced me off the bike.
Replacing a wheel was not something I had planned for 2026...
Some Christmas cheer for people walking around Edinburgh /s

🚧 Powderhall / St Mark’s Path – Update
Good news: the path will reopen from Fri 19 Dec to Sun 4 Jan while construction pauses, giving everyone on Quiet Route 20 a safer, more direct link over the festive period.
Council still reviewing options for a better route during future closures.
The normalisation of parking on zig zags in Edinburgh. A pedestrian crossing on Broughton Road. KY24 OAV. No sign of a driver.
Impressed by @corneliusbeers.bsky.social impromptu same-day bicycle delivery. I guess they fit in the bottle cages?
More Voi bikes available as scheme expands south and west
The Voi bike hire scheme is to expand south to King's Buildings and west to Roseburn from Wednesday. In the next fortnight there will be more bikes placed at designated parking in the city taking the number of electric bikes available to…
Photo of the extremely narrow section of the Ferry Road path behind Leonardo where they've pushed the temporary fence back out to where it pretty much obstructs the entire path again, especially when it's wet and the grass verge beside the path is already slippy and muddy.

#EdTravCyc Ferry Road path behind Leonardo down to less than 30cm in places where they've pushed the temporary fence back out without leaving enough space to pass. No way anything other than a narrow standard cycle can get past there without going on the (squelchy, muddy) grass...
The driver of a black BMW SUV has overrun the parking bay and knocked over a concrete bollard. The SUV is on the pavement and has been partly lifted up by the bollard. The front of the vehicle is crumpled. It has a vanity licence plate GLS 7. The pavement and road are damp. There are sandstone city centre buildings in the background. The zigzag white no parking lines of a pedestrian crossing can be seen
These vehicles pose significantly greater safety risks, with children *eight times* more likely to die if struck by an SUV and cyclists suffering much more severe injuries

More cycle hangars are currently being installed now on Halmyre Street, Thorntree Street, Pilrig Street, Springfield, & East Claremont Street.
These fill up pretty fast so it may be worth checking out the Greasemonkey website in the coming weeks. www.edinburgh.gov.uk/cycling-walk...
*All-time record* set at the Omni Centre cycle lane on the 7th November - 2,265 cycle journeys.
I can only speculate that the rollout of Voi e-bikes has significantly boosted cycling in Edinburgh this autumn, bucking the seasonal trend.
Does anyone know if there needs to be some sort of risk assessment on this? Sending thousands of cyclists around Crewe Toll, and with only two days notice, is absolutely insane.
Edinburgh Council once again demonstrating what they really think about walking, cycling, running in this city.
This is the equivalent to closing the bypass for two months and directing drivers over the top of the Pentlands.
Well done to Edinburgh Police for calling what these things are - motorcycles.
I hope the rider recovers from his injuries soon.
Let's not get excited - what's the wait time going to be like at rush hour?
I raised this at Transport Committee today. Officers are checking with colleagues in signals and will report back. They did agree that 10 min wait "seems excessive" 🙄
Cllr Booth
Bluesky Report of 10 mins wait to cross Edward Tissiman @edtiss.bsky.social · 17h Currently a 10 minute wait for pedestrians/cyclists at the London Road/Leith Walk junction. On a typical 1 mile walking commute, 1/3rd of it could spent waiting at this single junction. Pathetic from Edinburgh Council, who claimed that the changes here would have no impact on active travel.

Q: Cllr @chasbooth.bsky.social says new left turn #ElmRow --> #LondonRoad reported to cause long delays (up to 10 mins!) to 🚶👩🦼🚲crossing
A: Officer surprised if so but will investigate & report to ward councillors
@edtiss.bsky.social @jackrmcaldwell.bsky.social @mcdmartin.bsky.social
Not sure if it’s officially officially open yet as the entrance on Dock Street still has fencing - but the Leith Connections section along Sandport has had all barriers removed and is a JOY to ride!
Want to ride along? 😁
@edi.bike
I can't imagine how frustrating this stuff is if you're blind, disabled, got kids and so on. 10 minutes! And to think pedestrians are top of the hierarchy. Empty rhetoric.
Thanks to @mcdmartin.bsky.social for taking the time.
