This started as a #52frames_redo, but ended up feeling like a summary — not a #selfportrait so much as a record of motion, hesitation, and growth. Some things only make sense when you stop trying to fix them and let them settle.

I had several options for this week's prompt but the early morning glow at the Rotunda left little question of the obvious choice.

A minimalist black-and-white photograph features a single candle centered perfectly within the frame, its steady flame rising vertically against a deep, unbroken black background. The composition is symmetrical and deliberate, every element converging toward the middle, emphasizing balance, calm, and focus. The candle’s body, slightly uneven at the top where melted wax has pooled and hardened, anchors the image at the bottom edge. Its wick, half-consumed and curved, burns with a sharp, elongated flame that fades softly from bright white at the core to gentle gray tones near the edges. The absence of any other detail amplifies the purity of the scene: no context, no distraction; only light, shadow, and form.
The photograph embodies the theme “Centered Composition” in its purest expression: a meditation on simplicity and alignment. The candle’s flame, perfectly vertical, divides the image into two equal halves, creating a sense of visual and emotional stability. The high contrast between the luminous flame and the dark void surrounding it evokes introspection, an image of focus and inner quiet. It feels like a visual breath, suspended in stillness. The symmetry isn’t cold or rigid; rather, it suggests serenity and presence, as though the image itself were an exercise in mindfulness. Each subtle texture, the soft gradation of light, the delicate imperfections of wax, contributes to an intimate visual rhythm. In its silence and precision, the photograph turns the act of looking into contemplation, inviting the viewer to rest their gaze at the center, where light is born from darkness.

Week #43 of 52Frames: Centered Composition!

Only a flame that calls us again and again, until nothing remains but its quiet light, centered, and center of our focus.

For this week’s photo challenge “centered composition”, I submitted this closeup of a garden spider by our trash dumpster which surprised me when I took out the trash today. So glad I didn’t bump into it! #52frames_centeredcomposition #nikon #z6 #photography

52Frames: Center Composition. I overthought the exercise too much this week, so ended up with this glowing pumpkin in honor of decorative gourd season.
