Underpainting studies of apples in watercolor~ These are all red apples which were painted over with the same red paint, but with different colors for the underpainting (the first layer of watercolor paint). The first apple on the top left corner was painted with a blue underpainting (warm blue); the second apple to the right was painted with a red underpainting, making it the most saturated of all; the apple in the bottom left corner was painted with a green underpainting; and the last apple on the bottom right corner was painted with cyan (cool blue). A layer of warm yellow pigment was applied to all applies before the final layer of red pigment. My favorite underpaintings here are the blue and cyan, and I'll probably use those again in future work involving underpaintings.
