I embarked on #ASingleMap project, by bike, and discovered new places in my local area. I also had some great bikepacking and other trips, further afield, with my brother and my son
Merry Christmas
This Robin posed nicely for me last year in SX 97 87, just one of the 400 1km squares within my map.

Bob was in town so perfect excuse to run 10k up the river to meet him for breakfast. The post breakfast run home was a soggy affair in the persistent rain. A great way to break up the planned long run.
A bit of a diversion & a wiggle meant I introduced a few new roads for my heat map.
#ASingleMap
I got disoriented running around Whipton today as I filled in a gap in my heatmap.
10k of looping around the streets and paths through the rain.
All to add new red lines to the map.

A door to the future? Alastair Humphreys' latest book, 'LOCAL-a search for nearby nature and wildness' informs, surprises, inspires.
In short sections that make it easy to read in segments of time we all have, Best Book of the Year? I think so!

I picked a new route to run to Teignmouth today.
30km through the Haldon foothills & Ashcombe, finding a new trig point on Teignmouth golf course before the long descent to the sea.
Short detour up a dead end lane to run a new stretch of road in my #ASingleMap
Great day to be out & about #running
Firecrests - over the last two weeks I’ve added three new squares to my Firecrest map. Today I heard 3 birds in 93 80 near Mamhead. One popped up right next to the lane. Love them!
My Firecrest map is a 20kmx20km OS map centred on my home. #ASingleMap
27km run from home to complete a section of Sanctuary Lane that I’d not covered for my #ASingleMap challenge before adding a bit of the busy B3180 & a narrow path across the Commons.
A couple of calling Firecrests the birding highlight.
Exploring my map - over the last week I’ve run & walked through new places in my map.

Celebrating my go to trainers for those pre work slower runs.
These shoes have taken me along a journey of 2,115km. In their prime, I reserved them for long days out running around Devon lanes & trails. They covered much of my map on my #ASingleMap adventure.

2/2 Salterton Road - From Salterton Road, I wound my way back to the estuary avoiding routes previously run. A few more lines added to my heat map of exploration.

1/2 - Salterton Road - there’s been an irritating gap in my #ASingleMap heat map along Salterton Rd, Exmouth. But no more.
I ran back from the beach yesterday with 2 targets (see Ring-necked Parakeets & fill in the gap). Double success, with a Clouded Yellow butterfly a lovely bonus.
Scenes reminded me of The Housemartins' "Build" which I heard live, last night, sang by Paul Heaton.
Caravan storage on the edge of the opencast workings development site.
Earth-moving machines crawl back and forth behind the fence.
Traffic shuttles on the M621 through a gap in the hedge.
The area identified as "Opencast Workings" (we're on an outlier of the YDN coalfield here, I guess) is subject to ongoing re-development and "edge land" uses. The noise of the nearby motorway is constant but nature finds a way... #ASingleMap @alastairhumphreys.bsky.social
SE 25 28. I explored the PRoWs in the south west corner of the square, hopeful of finding Dean Wood.
The area, hemmed in by major roads and business/industrial parks, is itself subject to development but these functional bodies of water (drainage/run-off lagoons?) provide habitat diversity as reedbeds.
Dean Wood/Dean Beck (dean/dene is a local word for a steep sided, small valley) is fenced off along the treeline here. What are "they" trying to keep us out of?
The Merlin app. picked up birdsong here, all against a background rumble of traffic and earth-moving machines.
Dropped my car off for repair so I thought I'd resurrect my random #ASingleMap project. Sort of. This area isn't on my map but exploring where you are is in the spirit of @alastairhumphreys.bsky.social project. SE 25 28, between Morley and Gildersome, Leeds. Top of Gelderd Rd. Junc.27 of the M62.
A new route through the woods. Another red line added to the heat map.
Nightjars churred as I took this image
A heat map of all runs & walks since 01/01/24 across the pebblebed commons.
Dusk run - a 10km run around the pebblebed commons. A mix of familiar & unfamiliar tracks, the familiar looking less familiar as the light faded. Each step adding to my heat map.
Nightjars churred & quiped as the light faded, with one bird providing a fantastic flyby.

Nice bespoke gift though? #ASingleMap dropped at a far away friends home…. I might surprise a friend with this!

Really enjoyed this book. It wasn’t just the weekly journeys & what Alistair saw, it was the rabbit holes he went down as a result of them that fascinated me. Big topics like food production but also folklore, collective nouns, history, ancient celebrations all woven together. #ASingleMap #BookSky
OS grid square SE 14 41. Home of many childhood adventures as a kid, through Scouts and otherwise.
An ancient bridge, north of Faweather Grange, on the edge of my square.
I've not done #ASingleMap thing for a while but, while the lad is sailing with Scouts, I thought I'd check out this familiar square km of my local patch. I've ridden up and down Sconce Lane loads since I was a kid. A lovely spot on the fringe of Bradford. An ancient landscape in lots of ways.
Hard to make out today’s new lines on my map. But I know they are there in the SE corner. 😃
20km x 20km map centred on my home. Heat map of adventures since 1 Jan 2024.

A 10km run around the Budleigh Salterton streets. That’s all of the streets of Budleigh done (at least those that fall within my map’s boundaries).
That just leaves the remaining streets of Exeter, Exmouth, Chudleigh & Cranbrook. But I’ve no intention of finishing those…

Glowmap
I’ve turned my running & walking around an OS map into art using Glowmap.
My brushed aluminium print now hangs in pride of place on my wall.
Mike at Glowmap has produced a short blog about my Strava map, which you can read here 👇🏻😃

Firecrest distribution map using 1km squares
Songogram of a singing Firecrest
One of the Firecrests required an update to my #ASingleMap Firecrest distribution map.
The Firecrest songogram is really distinctive.
OS 1:50000 map showing grid squares crossed out.
Added another couple of squares to my #ASingleMap project yesterday. A family walk from Ilkley station, past its grand houses and to the moor via Hebers Ghyll. Then to Ben Rhydding via Rocky Valley and Cow & Calf. All baht 'at.
My Exmouth heatmap 01/01/24 to date
My Budleigh Salterton heatmap - 01/01/24 to date
Exmouth & Budleigh - there are plenty of new roads to run in Exmouth & Budleigh so I did a bit of work on my heat map today. I’ll finish the Budleigh streets another day, but I’ve no intention of completing Exmouth.

#asinglemap Just read Alistaire Humphries Local , a book about the British countryside and urban sprawl . It’s a book full of interesting facts and a book of inspiration to get out and explore. It joins the books in our bookshop !
Thanks. cycle.travel looks good. I'll give it a go. I hope to resume my #ASingleMap project and manage some overnight trips.

Tree of the day - a pine tree stands on Woodbury Common
A distribution map of Firecrest records from 2024 & 2025
Another run, another Firecrest - a short run around Woodbury Common this morning.
Increasingly warm as the run progressed and the sun rose.
A Firecrest sang from the hill fort at the end of the run. Another square added to my distribution map.
