Terwijl het Rijk via het ministerie van Justitie en Veiligheid zelf zaken doet met het Israëlisch defensiebedrijf dat wegens mensenrechtenschendingen in opspraak is, legt het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken een andere, Nederlandse fabrikant van tapvoorzieningen een verkoopverbod op. Dat bedrijf mag geen onderdeel van een telecomnetwerk leveren aan de Egyptische overheid, omdat dat in strijd zou zijn met Europese handelsregels in verband met de risico’s van mensenrechtenschendingen. Het bedrijf kreeg vorige maand schriftelijk een definitief verbod om aan Egypte te leveren. Minister Klever voor Buitenlandse Handel en Ontwikkelingshulp schreef het bedrijf: „Ik ben mij ervan bewust dat deze afwijzing voor aanvrager economisch en financieel nadelige gevolgen kan hebben. Deze wegen echter niet op tegen het belang dat Nederland zich houdt aan de volkenrechtelijke verplichtingen aangegaan in het belang van de internationale vrede en veiligheid.” De directeur van het bedrijf, die niet met zijn naam of bedrijfsnaam in de publiciteit wil, noemt het „hypocriet” dat Nederland en de EU zelf miljarden in Egyptische veiligheidsorganisaties investeren om vluchtelingen naar Europa tegen te houden, maar tegelijkertijd hem verbieden om „technologie die de nationale veiligheid en stabiliteit van een land bevordert” te leveren.
