We've long known that ferns were the first to establish after the ☄️that killed the 🦕. They're also some of the first species to arrive after 🌋. In a new paper, led by former #BEASTLab postdoc @L_AzSchmidt, we suggest that ferns may play a special role in ecological recovery.

#BEASTLab undergraduate Cas Carroll (they/them) wanted to find out! They worked with former postdoc @CaitlinInMaine (she/her) on a sediment core from Sargent Mountain Pond to identify plant macrofossils—fragments of leaves, needles, and seeds from plants growing around the pond.
Huge congratulations to @biodiversitybb, who successfully defended her Masters thesis on the biogeography of New England’s alpine plants! She hiked the elevation Al equivalent of Mount Everest for her fieldwork. #BEASTLab ⛰️ 🌱 🥾

The #BEASTLab is family friendly (four babies born in the lab so far!), we eat a lot of cake, there's no traffic, there are cross-country ski trails on campus, and we're close to mountains, forests, rivers AND the ocean.
