At La Canoa, two momentous events occurred, one joyful, the other tragic. Maria Ignacia Manuela Pinuelas Feliz, the wife of a soldier, gave birth to a boy, Jose. Within hours, the mother died, the only fatality of the entire Expedition. She was later buried at San Xavier del Bac. The boy survived and completed the journey to San Francisco.
2/ Only one life was lost—a woman who died giving birth—yet the caravan pushed on, reaching Alta California to lay the foundations of San Francisco.
The Juan Bautista de Anza historical trail through AZ and CA commemorate this feat.
