My bear canister has been a convenient place to put stickers collected from various parks, preserves and gear companies. It's time to get it dirty. Still not sure how I'm going to carry it, in or on my pack.

Still over a week away, but I'm starting to get organized for the first backpacking trip of the year! Heading to black bear territory and will finally get legit use of my sticker board.🤪 I mean Bear cannister. #backpacking #hiking #appalachiantrail #at2026 #sectionhiking #outdoorgear

We are standing hundreds of feet up a mountainside looking down at a river valley ravaged by industrial air, ground and water pollution. Beneath a whitewashed hazy sky the AT climbs through a surreal wasted landscape of naked rock — gigantic boulders covered with chunks of blasted rubble. Occasional black, broken skeletons of dead trees grope upward through the barren mass. There are continuous panoramic views into the smoky industrial valley below. Beyond the heavily localized devastation, the valley and the mountainside across the river from us is heavily wooded. Distant views are heavily obscured by the steamy, dirty air.

July 25, 1983: The ensuing trail was one of the most intriguing portions of the entire Appalachian Trail. It climbed out of the gap over a huge rockslide.

When the views are horizontal but the climbs are vertical: a pause for a panorama in Georgia on our 2012 Appalachian Trail thru-hike attempt.

Beneath a deep blue cloudless sky, we are following a trail along the crest of a mountain range through early springtime forests of trees that are either growing out large yellow or pink blossoms or bright green spring leaves. The sun-drenched forest floor is carpeted with lush green grass in most places. To our right we are passing a cluster of light gray boulders around a slightly larger outcrop of the same rock.

May 18, 1983: A lot of ups and downs along a rolling stretch of ridge crest brought us to Russell Field Shelter.

Home, sweet home on the Paria River Wednesday night. There were cattle nearby who wanted to be friends, but I issued a stern warning about no visits in the middle of the night and all was well.
