But since 1997, you have another option, and that is the engineering marvel known as the Confederation Bridge. Opened for use in 1997, the Confederation Bridge, or Fixed Link fulfilled a promise made to the residents of Prince Edward Island that one day they would be joined to the rest of Canada by a permanent connection. The bridge is an engineering feat, and is the longest bridge in the world over ice-covered water. Built to last for 100 years, at a cost of $1 billion,it is a multi-span concrete box girder design,with high arches built near the center of the 7 mile crossing, so that large ships may pass safely beneath. It is considered one of the engineering marvels of the 20th century
