Even though 87 per cent of grant applicants missed out on money in the ARC’s $103m Discovery funding round for early-career researchers, left-of-field humanities research has secured significant public funding.
Research into the role of Australian’s women’s magazines in shaping political discourse has won a $528,288 grant for Blair Williams from Monash University. “By combining archival research, focus groups and interviews, this project expects to generate new knowledge on how women’s magazines frame politics, how politicians use these platforms, and how they impact on women’s political engagement,’’ the ARC states on its website. “Expected outcomes include a website, exhibition, academic publications, and development of a documentary’’.

#DECRA assessor reports are not so good. Lots of good re capability, not good re the project itself. I highlighted all the good bits which made me feel better. I knew it was always going to be a long shot with only finishing radiation therapy in January and starting the application not long after.

On Friday arvo ARC said #DECRA outcomes would be announced on Monday (today). BUT they accidentally made a document public on their webserver revealing the successful grants.
Beyond grateful for the news that my Australian Research Council #DECRA application was successful - an end to precarious, short-term contracts is in sight! Three years of research funding to examine medieval histories of conquest and their continued resonances. Looking forward to getting stuck in!
