The voice on the other end sounds like a loved one in trouble, or a bank teller warning you of fraud. But is it? “Phone scams are notoriously common in our area. Almost every day, you receive one or two scam calls,” Xiangbin Teng told ZME Science. Teng is a cognitive neuroscientist at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Like the rest of us, he was dealing with an influx of convincing, AI-generated spam calls. Instead of just hanging up, he decided to turn the annoyance into a broader, fascinating scientific inquiry. He and a team of researchers from Tianjin University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong set out to see if the human brain can actually tell the difference between a real human voice and an AI clone. The results reveal a bizarre quirk of human perception. Consciously, we are terrible at spotting deepfakes. Subconsciously, our brains are already onto the machine’s tricks.
