The Interest Nobody Is Calculating Velocity debt compounds like financial debt. Unlike financial debt, nobody is tracking the balance.

AI tools are increasing output velocity. But they are also making the cost side of the equation harder to see.

The speed gain is real. The interest is just not on any balance sheet yet.

A cinematic portrait of a distinguished, elderly male Field CTO / Architect with a serious, analytical expression. He is dressed in a dark obsidian-colored three-piece suit, waistcoat, tie, and black leather gloves. He is carefully examining a massive, intricate, glowing golden IDP (Internal Developer Platform) interface made of complex data lines and grids. His left gloved hand is pressing against a section of the shimmering golden glass panel, visually feeling the constraint of the structure he designed. On the interface, charts, graphs, and key text including 'IDP', 'GOVERNANCE MANDATE', and 'PLATFORM CONTROL' are visible in glowing gold data. The background is a moody, dimly lit futuristic brutally server hall with massive racks in cold blue light, contrasting with the warm, rich golden cage structure. The ground is dark reflective obsidian. The mood is serious, analytical, and constrained.

You didn't build a Developer Platform. You built a Golden Cage.

IDPs built for control instead of consumption will always fail.

Developer Experience is More Than Just Productivity Metrics If we want to foster true innovation, we have to realize that Developer Experience (DevEx) is the journey, while Developer Productivity is simply the destination.

I finally got around to converting a talk that I have given a few times into a blog post about some of the key differences between #DevEx and Developer Productivity.

Coding Agent Development Workflows I’ve been playing around with software development workflows for AI agents. here’s everything I know (it’s probably wrong)

Nick Tune’s take on coding-agent workflows is spot on: success isn’t about autonomy, it’s about structure.

Agents need boundaries, feedback loops, and human review to scale beyond demos.

• Independent CI + centralized CD → team autonomy meets deployment consistency

I had a problem. I had accumulated too many MCP servers over time. So I asked Kiro to improve its own configuration and group tools into Powers that are loaded in context only when needed. Self-optimization is a new pattern.

Onboarding is more than Admin. It’s a Leadership Choice.
The first few weeks in a new role, team, or context shape confidence, trust, and momentum. Fast access to tools, platforms, and information isn’t a perk. It sets expectations about how quickly someone can become effective and how supported they feel along the way.

⏱️ When access is slow or context is missing, friction appears quickly. Uncertainty and anxiety are common, especially when joining a new team and trying to understand how things really work. Energy gets spent navigating the system rather than learning within it.

🧠 This is where Developer Experience and Employee Experience meet. Thoughtful onboarding removes friction and provides context. Not just what tools exist, but why they exist and how work flows. That context helps people sense-make and begin to navigate with confidence.

🌳 Leadership means investing in capability. Capabilities shouldn’t be built only when they’re urgently needed. They need to be created, cultivated, and maintained - in a constant state of readiness for use and deployment. Like an effective runbook, an effective onboarding pack needs to pass the 3 AM test.

🧠 That often means prioritising investment in resources, material, and experience over the latest urgent priority. The former creates a system that mitigates exceptions. The latter just reacts to them.

🚀 Done well, this reduces overall lead time to productivity. People move faster because they know what question to ask next and where to go for answers.
Good onboarding sets people up to succeed.

It’s 'Team Craft'. And it’s not a Project - it’s Ops.

Before:
• "Where is this referenced?" → Grep. Scan. Parse. Blown out context. Low-confidence answer.

After:
• "Show me circular dependencies" → ⚡️ Done.
• "What is the impact of this change?" → ⚡️ Done.
• "Find any dead code" → ⚡️ Done.

Less token waste. More signal.

7 Common IDP Implementation Pitfalls (and How to Avoid Them) A guide to building IDPs on Kubernetes and public cloud, outlining 7 common implementation pitfalls, how to avoid them, and where open source tools fit in.

Many IDPs stall not for technical reasons, but because they’re treated as infrastructure projects instead of products with real customers: your developers. This piece breaks down 7 common pitfalls and how to avoid them.
