Sam Concklin (@concklincomics) Hi Substack! 👋 I’m Sam, a cartoonist from Chicago. This year I published my 2nd and 3rd graphic novels (projects I’ve worked on for nearly 10 years!). Looking to grow my audience and readership here…

Hey y'all, I just made a Substack!

I've been writing an email newsletter for a while (with very little growth) so I'm giving this a go.

I'm sharing what I'm working on, plus mental health and productivity tips for neurodivergent creators.

#DrawingTip #Arttip #art #drawing for arms and legs from my experience. Its a flatline and a curved line. The flatline is the top of the arm, the harder part, and the curved line is the bottom part, the softer part where most of the fat goes.

A sketching tip that shows an initial sketch of a flying gull. The next step pushes the design by enlarging the wings, reducing the depth of the body (for contrast), and shortening the beak. Sketch by Charlotte Belland

It’s the end of the semester #ccadedu so here’s a sketching tip from class: Push the Pose also applies to design! #sketchtip #drawingtip

Let me see if I can keep doing a #TuesdayTip each week.

Today's tip for Illustrators: take a look at your work in progress work in a different way like flipping it horizontally if you work digitally, or look at it in a mirror if you work traditionally.

First step to better illustrations: thumbnails.
I had honestly forgotten about this valuable preparation step. Exploring different settings, poses and compositions for your idea will lead to a better end result. Rather than going with your first idea 💪🏼

A close up of a transparent line with a background and fill on either side. When looking closely, you can literally see the color transition between the fill and the background under the line.

The same picture, but *way* better. The transition between the fill and background is almost completely hidden except for areas where the line is very, very light.

Holy shit, I FINALLY found a way in Krita to do textured transparent line art without ghosting effects!

On the left, here's how a normal transparent line looks. You can see the color transition under it. On the right, here's how my method looks.

Quick #drawingtip!

Let's say you want to draw a complicated shape in perspective, like a shoe! Maybe it is a widetoebox shoe which has way less references online than a standard shoe. Something we can do is have our own reference using very minimal Blender knowledge with free 3d objects. (1/5)
