The small shadows it leaves under the curls of the sheepskin reminds Velouria of fish scales. She imagines a sunfish darting through a mountain stream, navigating the rocks and reeds and leaf litter, its soft white underbelly aglow. Her hand swims across the blanket, following the silk stream sun to the matching hand of her lover. “Selkie, dear,” Velouria whispers. Two of her fingers pet her skin, then squeeze, tying them together by their hands. “Are you awake?” Selkie inhales, back arching as she stretches, her neck baring itself to the room as her head shifts on the pillow. Her eyes are still shut, but her lips part in a lazy smile. “Only because it’s you asking,” she mumbles, her voice clogged with sleep. Velouria’s nose crinkles. “It’s too early in the morning for you to try to charm me.” With a hum, Selkie leans toward Velouria, perhaps instinctively. “Time…” She pauses to yawn. “Isn’t real.”
