I dati del Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope della NASA rivelano la bolla di gas in formazione dell’ammasso stellare Westerlund 1. I colori più brillanti indicano una maggiore probabilità che i raggi gamma provengano da specifici tipi di sorgenti puntiformi, in particolare due pulsar situate al centro e nella parte più luminosa dell’immagine. I contorni rosa indicano bruschi cambiamenti di probabilità. Una struttura sottostante color arancione-magenta si estende verso il basso nell’immagine, a partire dalla posizione dell’ammasso, e rappresenta il deflusso nascente. Le linee grigie indicano la distanza al di sotto del piano galattico. La bolla è lunga oltre 650 anni luce ed è leggermente inclinata allontanandosi da noi. L’attività stellare di Westerlund 1 spinge più facilmente il gas verso l’esterno, in regioni a densità più bassa del disco della galassia.

L'ammasso è in gran parte nascosto alle lunghezze d'onda visibili dalle nubi di polvere, che la luce infrarossa riesce a penetrare. La popolazione stellare di Westerlund 1, ampia, densa e diversificata, composta da stelle massicce, non ha eguali nella Via Lattea.
