Did you know: If an immigrant enters this country legally but overstays a visa, it is NOT a crime. It is a CIVIL offense (as is jaywalking or illegal parking). Almost half of undocumented persons are believed to fall into this category. And even if a person enters this country without a visa, it is only a MISDEMEANOR-like minor traffic violations. It is only a serious crime (a felony) if a person is deported then comes back. In 2012 the Supreme Court ruled that "as a general rule, it is not a crime for a removable alien to remain in the United States." Arizona vs. United States. So we are trampling on the Constitution and terrorizing families who-overwhelmingly- have either committed no crime at all or a misdemeanor at worst. Please think about that.

Instinct says, he overstayed his visa and by law he must leave. But this episode could also be a starting point for reflecting on the stupidity of (travel) visa requirements in general. The first visa was introduced just 170 years ago. We could easily get rid of the requirement again. #freeMovement
