Webinar: ABMI Alberta-wide Wetland Inventory - June, 2 2021
Welcome to the It's Our Nature To Know Webinar Series!
In the first episode of the series, join Evan DeLancey, Fiona Gregory, and Agatha Czekajlo as they discuss the ABMI's new Alberta-wide Wetland Inventory. This will include: 1) technical details on how the inventory was generated using Google Earth Engine, Earth observation data, and machine learning for three ecoregions in Alberta; 2) areas of research and development to improve wetland mapping/monitoring data moving forward; and 3) how this tool can be used in land-use decision making.Several years in the making, this work would not have been possible without the generous support of Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP).
Going forward, we’re delighted to be working with Ducks Unlimited Canada and AEP to integrate new information and technological processes to develop the next generation of wetland inventories for the province that conforms to AEP’s new wetland inventory standards and guidelines.
About the ABMI:
Alberta is home to more than 80,000 species including plants, animals, arthropods, bacteria, fungi, and algae. At each location, we collect data on both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. We also track changes in habitat structure and human development. Over the years the ABMI’s values have not changed: we deliver scientifically credible, value-neutral, independent, and publicly accessible data. Our purpose is to inform government, industry, environmental communities, First Nations and the public about what is happening in our environment so that they can make informed decisions and plan for the future.
