When MacKenzie Scott announced she would give away 1 billions of her fortune, many expected lavish galas, headlines, and buildings named in her honor. Instead, she chose a different path - a silent revolution of generosity. One small immigrant-support nonprofit once received an unexpected multi-million-dollar check from her. At first, the staff thought it was a mistake. "This can't be real,” their director said. But it was real. MacKenzie Scott had just transformed their mission. And this is only one of hundreds of such stories. Who is MacKenzie Scott? Born in San Francisco in 1970, Scott studied under Nobel laureate Toni Morrison at Princeton, became a novelist, and was married for 25 years to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. After their divorce in 2019, she became one of the world's wealthiest women overnight, with $38 billion in Amazon stock. But unlike many billionaires, she chose not luxury - but impact. She signed the Giving Pledge, vowing to donate most of her wealth during her lifetime. And she began doing it at a speed and scale the world had never seen. A Different Kind of Philanthropy Since 2019, Scott has donated more than $14 billion to over 1,600 organizations - faster than any philanthropist in history. Her approach is defined by three principles: Give Big: Multi-million-dollar gifts, often to small organizations. Give Fast: No bureaucracy, no endless applications - just action. Trust Completely: No strings attached. No naming rights. No reports demanded. This "trust-based philanthropy" lets organizations use the money where it's needed most - because she believes those on the ground know better than billionaires in boardrooms.
Who She Supports Scott focuses on groups often overlooked: Community colleges & education programs for low-income students Food banks & hunger relief efforts Racial justice and equality initiatives Women's shelters & anti-domestic violence programs Immigrant and refugee support organizations She doesn't just fund the big names. She finds small, local groups the ones whose impact is massive but resources scarce. The Impact Her donations have changed millions of lives: A community college expanded its scholarship programs. A Midwest food bank doubled its storage and feeding capacity. A racial justice group in Atlanta grew its legal aid for marginalized communities. Her giving not only saves lives it challenges how philanthropy works. While other billionaires chase attention, Scott stays out of the spotlight, letting the organizations shine. Interesting Facts She has no foundation – just a small advisory team. Many groups only discover her support when they receive the check. She's the first to give away so much, so fast, with so little publicity. Despite donating billions, her wealth keeps growing thanks to Amazon shares. MacKenzie Scott proves that true power isn't in holding wealth it's in letting it go. Her quiet generosity is reshaping communities, rewriting the rules of philanthropy, and reminding the world what real impact looks like.

Makenzie Scoott Foundation Makenzie Scoott Foundation New Mexico nonprofit Homewise as the organization received $35 million in donations from two groups. Homewise received $25 million from MacKenzie Scott's Yield Giving, a national organization, and another $10 million from Santa Fe-based Anchorum Health Foundation. Homewise is a statewide mortgage lender with the goal of helping working-class New Mexicans become homeowners by offering "homebuyer education" and "individualized financial coaching." One hundred percent of this is going to go into mortgages for people to buy a home or to fix their home and save energy or make repairs to build new homes. We're not going to spend on operations. It's all to be invested in the big picture," Homewise CEO Michael Loftin told the Journal on Thursday He also reveled at the fact that his nonprofit was selected. "New Mexico is just not on the map with national philanthropy that much, and the fact that we are on the map of somebody like McKenzie Scott is a huge deal. ... We think that is a recognition of the partnerships we've already developed here," Loftin said. The $25 million from Scott was a fraction of the $2 billion she donated nationwide.
Makenzie Scoott Foundation 2 The $25 million from Scott was a fraction of the $2 billion she donated nationwide. Scott is the ex-wife of Amazon co-founder and Albuquerque native Jeff Bezos. Bezos himself donated money to Albuquerque nonprofits this year with his fiancée, Lauren Sánchez, shelling out $6.25 million in donations to Catholic Charities and the Barrett Foundation. Sánchez is also an Albuquerque native. When it comes to the other $10 million Homewise received, Anchorum Health Foundation CEO Jerry Jones - not to be confused with the owner of the Dallas Cowboys - said a decades-long partnership between the organizations played a key role in their selection. Their mission here in Northern New Mexico is all about helping create basically successful home buyers and so one of our very earliest impact investments was providing down payment assistance and mortgages for hospital associates," Jones said. Jones believes the donations can have a massive impact. "This new investment of $10 million we really believe is catalytic because you have philanthropists like MacKenzie Scott and her Yield Giving Foundation, who are going to put in $25 million, so with our $10 million...that's a $35 million fund towards affordable housing in this community," Jones. said. "That is a game changer.

ESSENCE MAGAZINE Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has made a historic $70 million donation to the United Negro College Fund, marking one of the largest gifts in the nonprofit's history. The funding comes as UNCF pushes to raise $1 billion to strengthen 37 of the HBCUs the organization supports. UNCF President and CEO Dr. Michael L. Lomax calls the contribution "a once-in-a-generation opportunity" to secure the future of Black higher education. The donation will be invested in UNCF's pooled endowment, which aims to build $10 million for each HBCU, helping stabilize budgets and create lasting financial security. Scott, who signed the Giving Pledge in 2019, has consistently directed her wealth toward institutions uplifting marginalized communities. She previously gifted UNCF $10 million in 2020 and continues to make HBCUs a philanthropic priority. Read more about this donation at ESSENCE.com.
