Was privileged to see a competition pod of humpback whales yesterday. They were super aggressive and we saw one ride on top of another consistently for about 20 minutes. Amazing. Hope they're all okay.

Our Oceans Legal Director and member of this new team shared, "These #whales migrate hundreds of miles. The agency has been authorizing the fishery without any measures to ward off entanglements for too long. I look forward to working with other team members to develop protections for #humpbacks.”

For millennia, some of the world’s largest filter-feeding whales, including #humpbacks, fin #whales and blue whales, have undertaken some of the longest migrations on earth to travel between their warm breeding grounds in the tropics to nutrient-rich feeding destinations in the poles each year.

Once nearly wiped out by whaling, humpbacks are making a remarkable return to the Salish Sea. From “Big Mama” to new calves and songs that echo like human language, Salish Sea Sings Again celebrates resilience, recovery, and the whales’ vital role in our climate.

A black-and-white photo of people walking along a foggy, pebbled beach. Figures fade into the dense mist as they move further down the shoreline, creating a quiet, atmospheric scene. Taken on St. Vincent’s Beach on the Southern Shore of Newfoundland, famed for its humpbacks who visit the shore to eat capelin in the early summer. Through the fog sounds their slow steady blows punctuated by relentless rolling waves.
