Someone with such a huge platform as @theatlantic.com could have used said platform to make the case for federal funding for the arts and humanities and how it was a common good for ALL people and delve into what's happened to #NEH, #NEA, and #IMLS, but...nah.
#IMLS has become a weird history-as-propaganda department.
BTW, the mission of public libraries is NOT to tell a specific story but to provide access to all stories, along with dictionaries, encyclopedias, reference materials, local cultural artifacts, voter information, and free internet.

This week, the House of Representatives released a budget proposal that actually increases funding for libraries through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and preserves funding for the Innovative Approaches to Literacy program for school libraries. That’s right: while the current Administration has sought to dismantle IMLS, Congress is funding it. Because of your emails, calls, and visits to Congress, libraries are on the precipice of a massive win. ALA continues to monitor the ongoing Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 appropriations process. Barring any last-minute delays – and we know delays are always possible - these funding levels are poised to become law soon. Even if the vote is delayed, these funding provisions for libraries are a major accomplishment, and we wanted our advocates to be among the first to know. If we win, we’ll take a moment to celebrate this massive victory - then we’ll thank Congressmembers for their support and start working to defend this funding in the next year’s budget (only in a matter of weeks now!).
The Institute for Museum and Library Services is being funded for FY2026. The final vote on the budget has yet to happen--but the money is appropriated. This is a win! #imls
Per the American Library Association:
"The appeal...underlines how much the administration is intent on shuttering the agency–especially since it appears that the full sunsetting of the IMLS won’t happen in the FY2026 budget...[I]n prior markups, the agency retained a budget close to that of Fiscal Year 2025." #IMLS

It is beyond shameful and senseless that the National Endowment for the Humanities is third on this list. And for what? No reduction in budget, just mass grant terminations and staff layoffs.
(And yes, we see the Institute of Museum and Library Services there at #5. Also shameful). #IMLS #NEH

The "library destruction phase" actually started very early this year, with the gutting of the Institute of Museum and Library Services & the National Endowment for the Humanities.
MANY articles linked on our page document the decimation of grants and staff at libraries across the U.S. #NEH #IMLS
Screenshot of part of the text of the linked article: "For example, the American Alliance of Museums tried to survey the damage to the approximately 35,000 museums in the country. As reported by The New York Times, the organization estimates that about 10,000 of them had federal grants and contracts canceled in 2025, and not just by such expected funders as the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Funding was also pulled by such agencies as the National Park Service, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Science Foundation. That is nearly one-third of all museums in the country." From: https://www.orartswatch.org/arts-politics-2025-trump-assaults-top-the-years-cultural-news/
One-third of all museums across the United States.
The loss is staggering to those we at #NEH, #NEA, and #IMLS served:
"Grants and other spending across many federal agencies were curtailed, including those providing health care research and foreign aid. It was hard for anyone to understand which cuts were ordered because of ideological reasons and which were supposedly to reduce misspending." #NEA #NEH #IMLS
"The White House, however, still caused plenty of chaos with an array of actions and executive orders that resulted in funding cuts and the downsizing at a number of organizations that provide support for the broader book community." #NEH #NEA #IMLS #publishing
