Why winter does not justify ditching yo... February 17 • 54 mins Waging the War on Cars Welcome. Welcome to The War on Cars. The War on Cars * Mentioned around 12:52 I'm Sarah Goodyear. I'm Doug Gordon, and I'm one of the cohosts of The War on Cars. And I'm the other co-host of The War on Cars. And your book? It's called Life After Cars, Freeing Ourselves from the Tyranny of the Automobile. Sarah and Doug are New Yorkers. With their podcast and now their book, they encourage North Americans to want to change. We had a mayor in Toronto when I was living there, called Rob Ford, who made that one of his big campaign slogans to end the war on the car. This again is another example of the war on the car.

Lior Steinberg O• 1st Co-Founder & Urban Planner @ Humankind |... 2h • © .•• × Do you know what Sneckdowns are? They are the cheapest traffic consultants in the world. Sneckdowns are one of the most powerful (and free) urban planning tools in the world. When it snows, nature performs a perfect traffic analysis. The snow that stays on the asphalt shows us exactly which parts of the road cars don't actually use. It reveals the "dead space." Why does this matter? Wider sidewalks: That pile of snow is space where people could be walking. Ty Shorter crossings: It shows us where we can extend the curb to make crossing the street safer for children and the elderly. Of Slower speeds: It proves that lanes are often much wider than necessary, encouraging cars to drive faster than they should. We spend millions on consultants and sensors to decide how to redesign our streets. Sometimes, we just need to wait for a snowstorm and take a photo. The snow doesn't lie: our streets have plenty of space, and we gave it to cars by mistake. Let's use the winter to see where we can give it back to people.
Clarence Eckerson Jr. has been documenting Sneckdowns for years. Read the article in the comments. Sneckdown Halifax
Sneckdowns: Taking the World by Storm By Brad Aaron Jan 22, 2014 Narrowed roads Curved snowbanks Pedestrian patterns Image: Clarence Eckerson/BBC The #sneckdown is now a phenomenon, with nature's traffic-calming gaining international media coverage and photos popping up from across the U.S. and Canada. "The snow is almost like nature's tracing paper," Streetfilms' Clarence Eckerson told the BBC. "It's free. You don't have to do a crazy expensive traffic calming study. It provides a visual cue into how people behave."
