In this macro photograph, the large beetle is shown from the front, so that its pronotum is clearly visible, along with its small head beneath it. The pronotum is a shiny metallic green, dotted with tiny pits from which short hairs protrude. The head is fringed with dense hair, and there are two brown eyes on either side. Beneath the carapace, only the beetle’s dense body hair is visible. Brown soil surrounds it.
Today we dug up a Protaetia affinis beetle—actually a small scarab—from a flower bed in the garden. After taking a photo, I buried it again so it could hibernate until it’s ready to emerge. Its shell is beautiful. As humans, we’ve managed to create things […]

A macro photo of the face of a fuzzy brown moth. The moth's legs and face are covered in brown fur-like scales. Large yellow feathery leaf-shaped antennae emerge from above its dark eyes. The wings have a grayish brown leading edge which transitions to an orange brown.
A photo of the moth from above, it's wings spread. The forewings are orange brown with pink stripes near the root, and a small yellow eyespot just forward along the middle of the wing. A dark purple line is just forward of the trailing edge. The hind wings have black shading and feature magnificent black and yellow eye-spots, thought to mimic the eye patterns of owls, used to deter predation.
