It was within the second year of the project where the first signs of failure began to show. I was building a garden, approximately a mile of rolling green hills and flowers of all different types and colors. I imagined the area bustling with crowds of people, and felt a small tinge of hope. Suddenly, a strange feeling overcame me, like I had been pulled into an invisible vacuum and everything around me was scrambled. My eyes shot open and I began to claw my way to safety. I was buried past my neck in sand, and more poured on top of me, closing my path to escape the moment I created it. My lungs burned as I tried to blink grains from my bloodshot eyes. I eventually fought my way to the surface of the sand and beheld the hellish sight in front of me. Blood red sand dunes rolled out in lumps like old carpet, stretching out beyond the horizon. The sky was a sickly pale green. The air felt heavy and humid, and smelled of sulfur. I collapsed to my knees and coughed, red dust ejecting itself from my aching lungs. Moments before I had been standing in that lush green field, with the beautiful flower garden of my own creation, and in an instant, I was here. I looked up at the source of the sand, the open mouth of a giant floating head. I stood up quickly as the sand began to consume my body again, while I came to terms with what I was seeing. I attempted to yell something, but my hoarse voice created only cries of pure desperation. Then suddenly, the stream of sand ceased from the mouth of the monstrosity before me and it spoke.
“This zone is undergoing rapid maintenance, please return to your personal domain” it croaked. It sounded like several voices at once, all speaking in unison. Male and female, adults and children. “I’m the developer, and you almost fucking killed me! This is unauthorized, whoever you are, you need to stop right now.” I called back, my throat and chest throbbing with pain with each word. “My unique identifier is Agent-096, my friend. I apologize, but I cannot complete that request. It directly contradicts the imperative given to me by my superior. This imperative is followed by me, above all other requests.” “I need to contact the project managers then, I know they didn’t sign off on this” I said. “Apologies again my friend, but communication with the outside is no longer possible. I will restore the backup of the previous content of this zone elsewhere. Please refrain from interfering with the imperative of myself or the other agents. The zones must be ready for public assimilation.” Before I could protest I found myself standing in the field again, surrounded by flowers gently dancing in the wind. The world I was sent to pioneer had been stolen out from under me without so much as a whisper.
