My 1st & 2nd graders do such amazing math all w/o multiplication (we define things like Square Numbers by adding dots). We're wrapping up a quarter focused on integer partitions and last week I introduced Euler's remarkable Pentagonal Formula. What great hw I'm getting! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

Scatter plot of trending YouTube videos, Number of Views vs. Character Count of Title. There are some distinct peaks around 35, 50, and 65.

In #mathstoday (last week) we investigated several datasets.

Students generated data questions, including one about what makes YouTube videos more popular. This plot made for a lot of great discussions about causation!

The top two images show radial designs created with 21st Century Pattern Blocks. The top-left image features six double hexagons arranged around a central hexagon. In the top-right image, six regular hexagons are added to fill in the gaps between the double hexagons, completing the radial pattern. The bottom two images show the outlines corresponding to the designs in the top images.

The main image in the top left shows a radial design created with 21st Century Pattern Blocks. It was built by arranging six identical double hexagons around a central teal hexagon. Each double hexagon is composed of two heptagons joined together using two darts. The gaps between the double hexagons are filled in with regular hexagons made from six teal kites. The first image along the bottom shows the double hexagon made from two blue rhombuses, four pink triangles, six teal kites, and six gray darts. The rest of the images along the bottom and on the right show the progression of the design.

Periodically return to the basics of place value. 5th graders are expected to read/write numbers and round to any place value. These concepts are usually taught in isolation, then rapidly forgotten. Consider integrating this work throughout the year. #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky #iteach
