Twenty-some years ago I reminded my MLS students to store their libraries' card catalogs (not throw them out). Major power outages, I said, mean all your records will be inacessible & perhaps lost. You'll need those cards then. Feeling like a seer these days.

OK! #archivists and #libraryscience folks! I need some help. Is there any published or well known methodologies for searching your collections for an item that has been misplaced? As in, "we are 99%" sure it is still in the collection, but it is not where it should be... halp"

Speaking of NASA internships, the NASA Archives will be hiring, too.
For grad students in Information & Library Sciences, at one of several NASA centers.

I'll link to the NASA Headquarters job, & cram jobs at other centers into subsequent tweets.

Fun fact: My master's degree was mailed out on January 16th and still has yet to arrive. But I can download my degree as a pdf!! Might just go to library print it out to hang it up on my fridge cuz #libraryscience degree I paid out of pocket for needs to be displayed.

Currently, the store has no online presence except for FB, and the owner does not have an inventory database. What do you guys think about him hiring some MLS grad students to help him with creating something he can use for a website? #LibraryScience #MLS #BookSky 📚 💙

Dennis Kranz: Dennis Kranz argues that library pedagogy in public libraries lacks theoretical grounding, relying too heavily on practical methods and service logic. This limits its educational potential and weakens its legitimacy in broader pedagogical debates. He calls for a self-reflective, theory-conscious practice with stronger ties to educational theory, media pedagogy and interdisciplinary collaboration, supported by curriculum reform and research. Only then can libraries be recognized as true educational spaces, not merely service agencies. A more discursive, critically engaged understanding of learning—and of libraries’ unique role—is essential to unlocking their full potential as places of dialog, self-empowerment, and transformative education.

New article: ‘Mehr als Methoden!’ on library pedagogy theory. Dennis Kranz calls for deeper theoretical grounding in library pedagogy, beyond methods and output metrics. #libraryscience #education #pedagogy #openaccess

Throughout his career, he faced multiple accusations of sexual harassment, racism, and antisemitism. In 2019, the American Library Association – which Dewey co-founded – voted on removing his name from its top award to librarians. There was no debate and an overwhelming majority of ALA members voted in favor of taking Dewey’s name off the award.

It is the birthday, in 1851, of the influential library scientist Melvil Dewey. He created the Dewey Decimal System which has given a framework to library science and the organizing of information itself.
