November Month Note / Reflection Sketch by Me Before diving in, I want to share the way I’ve chosen to frame this month note. I find it helpful to work with a simple structure that keeps me honest and grounded: What I’m learning a…

November in #localgov felt like a beautiful muddle of clarity + fog – learning to trust slower, spot my blind spots faster, and turn all that messy tension into hopeful, tiny steps of progress. #leadership #learning #localgovdigital

We (still) need to talk about content – Sarah Lay

A post born of frustration: stop undermining the value of content in your product or services.

Imagine all the content vanished - long-form, mid weight and microcopy all gone. Still think you have a product? I’m not so sure…

Between January and March 2025, the Local Government Association carried out research on the cyber, digital, data and technology considerations at Local Government Reorganisation to understand the opportunities for digital transformation.

Our report brings together the findings of this research; the main findings being that effective cyber, digital, data and technology functions are vital in periods of organisational shift. Such functions help ensure the safe and reliable transition of services and help to embrace digital transformation opportunities to better place organisations to deliver in new and different ways, yielding long-term benefits.

Our research is based on interviews with officers in 17 councils, including eight of the nine unitary authorities newly created since 2019. Our findings highlight how councils can take advantage of necessitated change to remain 'safe and legal' and position the new council for continuous change and transformation during and beyond reorganisation.

Data Cymru has been the victim of a cybersecurity incident that has affected our systems. We experienced a ransomware attack that has temporarily disrupted our operations. The nature of the attack was unauthorised access to our systems resulting in the encryption of certain data.

Upon discovering the attack, we immediately initiated our incident response plan, which included:

● Isolating the affected systems to prevent further spread.
● Engaging with our IT provider and cybersecurity experts to assist in the investigation and remediation.
● The incident has been reported to the relevant authorities, and we are working closely with our ICT provider, our Data Protection Officers and the Information Commissioner's Office.

We are in the process of identifying the data that has been encrypted and are contacting those directly affected. As a result, some of our systems are currently offline, and other data systems or dashboards may not be updated as frequently as usual.

#localgovdigital - as part of our work looking at ways to scale the impact of Open Referral UK we have this short survey about service directories / information quality / standardisation of data. It is short, painless and will really help our work!
