2^2 = 4
4 times another 2 = 8 so 2^3 = 8
8x2 = 16, 2^4 = 16
16x2 = 32, 2^5 = 32
32x2 = 64, 2^6 = 64 --> 6th power
or
I know 2^2 = 4 and 4^3 = 64, so (2^2)^3 = 2^6 bc multiply exponents.
or
I know 2^3 = 8 and 8^2 = 64, so (2^3)^2 = 2^6

320 divided by 8
(320 + 40)/8
320/8 + 40/8
40 + 5 --> 45
Decompose & distribute for the win!
Or
Dividing by 8 is same as cutting in half 3 times:
360/2 = 180
180/2 = 90
90/2 = 45
Works bc (1/2)^3 = 1/8

What if the goal of teaching math is to develop mathematical reasoning... instead of getting answers to math questions?

Here's some visual number lines to help figure out 49 bags of 27 m&ms. We know 50 x 27 will be half of 100 x 27, or 10 times 5 x 27...
Then to figure out 49 bags, we subtract 1 bag of 27 from 1350.
Number lines: can show 1350 – 27 then – 7, OR
1350 – 30 then + 3

Continued calculations in ratio table to figure out 5 bags of 27 m&ms
Pam is engaging us in "real math math-ing"
Figuring out how many m&ms in 2, 10, 5 bags if 1 bag has 27 m&ms
How did you do it?
How could you??
Making the suggestion of several different strategies opens up your reasoning.

If you have 35 negatives and take away 37 negatives, you are left with –2 negatives, or the opposite of 2 negatives.
Therefore you have 2 positives.

One problem.
Many strategies.
Reasoning over memorization.
This week’s problem shows you how.

Hi, I’m Pam 👋
I believe math is FigureOutAble—not memorized, not rushed, not stressful.
Around here, I'm talking real student thinking, powerful strategies, and math that actually makes sense.
Follow along… this is just the beginning 💡

I’m thinking about 4/5 as 80%
Then 7/8 of 80 would be 70
And 70% is 0.7
So the product is 0.7.

4/5 x 1/8 =
One eighth of 80% =10% =0.1 =1/10
One of the best tips I recall being taught is that 'x' (multiplication) is 'of' - groups of, lots of, just of.
Knowing that you can multiply in any order (commutative) helped too
