#Serfdom was a condition of virtual slavery once common in #mediaeval Europe. By the time it was abolished with the #EmancipationManifesto of #AleksandrII on #ThisDayInHistory in 1861, #Russia was the last hold-out. It was another five years before state-owned #serfs were freed.
A folding souvenir (1970s) booklet reproducing the Bayeux Tapestry. The cover is pin, orange and yellow with an illustration of a king on a throne, a cathedral and three ships setting off for England.
A souvenir booklet that unfolds to illustrate the entire Bayeux Tapestry in tones of beige and brown.
Since everybody's talking (at least in the UK) about the #BayeuxTapestry, here's a '70s souvenir from Normandy.
The booklet opens to display the tapestry in full, but is too long to photograph flat. [Now to carefully refold!]

Took a solo day trip to #Toledo midweek. Magnificent #Mediaeval city - will post more on this. Happy day seeking out historic sites and sights (well, the whole place) and some legends. This is the Puente de Alcántara, you can get close to the river’s edge on a path. #Spain

Salle Church, second Sunday of Epiphanytide. Snowdrops in the churchyard, primroses and celendines poking through, and birdsong heralding a false Spring as incensing angels in feathery uniforms guard the main door. Amen.

Tamworth Castle, viewed against a bright blue skyline, with the statue of Aethelflaed on a plinth to the side
Tapestry showing a finely dressed woman in the centre surrounded by two men in an abundantly floral garden
Photograph of Cat, wearing a tricorn hat, in a gilt edged oval mirror
Grand Castle entrance, leading to a large oak door where hangs a Christmas wreath. Either side of the entrance are two huge Nutcracker figures.
All hail, First Lady of the Mercians! 👑
A delightful day out at one of our newest stockists, Tamworth Castle
The statue of Aethelflaed was lovely, if too high to see clearly
Tricorn provided and not model’s own, alas

I also have no idea how #Mediaeval is my No.5 😂
Unless it’s counting #LOTR or #RingsOfPower songs? Maybe even a little bit of #TheWitcher3?

On a box pedestal against a wall, both painted deep green, an intricately carved and painted altarpiece in the form of a box with two doors opening to the side. The inside of the doors are brilliantly painted and gilded with scenes of people, angels, and beasts. The interior of the box contains a Madonna and Child, a statue fully in the round, gilded; framed by a carved "altar screen" device of gothic arches and traceries, gilded and painted. The whole is amazingly well preserved for something almost 700 years old.
Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Städler Museum, stitched pano of the Altenberg Altarpiece, ca 1330, wings by Rheinischer Meister, Madonna and Child by Kölner Meister.

I have been looking at the Visitation of Dorset 1565 to try and understand the history of Mapperton, near Beaminster. Could a #mediaeval specialist clarify whether the use of the word residence means that the person lives there or just has property there .
