A photo of the front of a bright orange fuzzy moth on light blue painted wood. The moth's legs, face, and forebody are bright orange and covered in hair-like scales. The 2 front legs are tucked close to the moth's face almost making it look bashful. The little bit of the wings that are visible are the same shade of orange but with some small dark spots.

A large yellow and mottled brown moth on a wooden table. The moth's wings are spread. The forewings are mostly mottled brown with yellow tips, there is a small figure-eight shaped spot in the middle area. The moth's hindwings are mostly yellow with some mottled brown. There is a small single "eye-spot" in the upper middle area. The moth's body is fuzzy and the same yellow with brown mottling. This coloration is very similar to the color of fallen leaves of the Tulip Poplar (liriodendron tulipifera) and grapes (vitis) common in the moth's range, thus making what might be considered bright markings actually quite effective camouflage in the right setting.

The moth has brownish feathery antennae, a white head with a glossy black spot that almost looks like a curly mohawk hair-do. The rest of the moth's body is a light gray and fuzzy. The moth's wings are white with faint dark gray bands forward, and a black band along the trailing edge.

The front edges of the hindwings project in front of the forewings, and they're pale pink, gold, and brown. The furry thorax is purple with a gold stripe down the middle.

I think my favorite #moth photo I’ve taken is this Micropterix sp. on santolina. (Siena, Italy 6/23) I don’t know why but it strikes me as delicate yet determined!

Happy #Mothweek!

Happy #nationalmothweek! Moths are incredible insects that support pollination and serve as a vital food source for birds and mammals. With over 160,000 species worldwide, moths are significantly more abundant than butterflies yet receive just a fraction of our attention.
