Although #NationalPollinatorWeek has come and gone, our passion for pollinators is still as strong as ever!
In case you haven't heard of it before, I wanted to share an initiative we have at CSWCD - the Colonial Pollinator Pledge!

A Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele) nectars on a golden yellow Black-eyed Susan flower. The butterfly is sitting tilted with wings partially open so that light shines through three wings at once, showing the beautiful wing patterns of black checks and white spots on a background of golden orange.
The Great Spangled Fritillary sits on the Rudbeckia hirta flower, wings open. The furry body and central part of the wings are a warm rusty brown, with black shoulders patterned in orange blocks. The borders of both top and bottom wings have a wide band of light golden orange decorated with black dots and scallops and a slim edge of white.
The Great Spangled Fritillary with wings closed, showing the coppery-gold iridescent color under the wings, decorated with rows of large shiny spots of white outlined in brown. Oklahoma Northern Cross Timbers ecoregion, zone 7b.
A new butterfly in my garden, the Great Spangled Fritillary. The caterpillars will hatch this summer, then spend winter sleeping in the leaf litter under the violets they need to eat next spring. #butterflies #NationalPollinatorWeek #gardening 🌱 🦋

She revisited our garden again today. Spicebush Swallowtail on vibrant Echinacea flowers. Our garden is merely a supplement to our bountiful meadows and woods.

A fly that looks like a bee visiting a white flower that is open face with five white petals and a yellow pollen filled center.
Happy #nationalpollinatorweek!
Spread pollen responsibly and
if you take some, leave some.

#NationalPollinatorWeek Spotlight: Ever spotted a "tiny ant on a flower"? You might've met a Small Carpenter Bee! These overlooked native bees are <8mm, but they're pollination powerhouses! No hives, they nest in plant stems. Fascinated? Stay tuned for our July newsletter to dive deeper!
White open magnolia flower
Beetles pollinate too! According to the Smithsonian, Magnolia trees, which evolved before bees, rely on beetles. Their tough flower parts withstand beetle bites and even mimic pollen to keep beetles around longer.

A small longhorned bee, I think Epimelissodes petulca, a Broad-banded Longhorn bee, makes her way around the cone of a Black-eyed Susan, Rudbeckia hirta flower. It is a small bee with lots of tawny blond hair on its legs and head and green eyes.
Another view of the back of the bee showing the black and gray stripes on the abdomen.

A Brown-belted Bumblebee braces his legs against the stamen of a magenta winecup flower to get at the nectar, scattering white pollen all around.
The bumblebee is now looking at the photographer, legs starting to vibrate in preparation for liftoff before flying at her head a few times, the nosy wench.

A tiny black and white striped furrow bee with yellow legs feeds on top of a maroon perfumeballs (Gaillardia suavis) flower. The bee is probably a Ligated Furrow Bee, Halictus ligatus, but I'm not sure
Closeup of the furrow bee holding the tiny orange cup of a flower in its forelegs, face buried inside.
Pollinator Week is almost over and I haven't been posting enough bees. First, here is a furrow bee on perfumeballs. #bees #nativeplants #NationalPollinatorWeek

This week is #NationalPollinatorWeek, a time to reflect on the vital role of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, bats, moths, beetles, and hummingbirds, to our ecosystems and raise awareness of the threats these animals are facing. 🦋🌼
#NationalPollinatorWeek 35% of global food crops depend on animal pollination. #FoodandFarmFacts

And finally, a southeasterly flight for a tasty flower landing
While taking plant photos for a future seed listing I caught this happy little Bumblebee on an intercept flight towards it's flower destination from four different directions. I found it pretty funny and thought I'd share!

Hold the salt! DYK slugs are pollinators? They snack on plants, but they also pollinate flowers through malacophily. They're also known to pollinate when other insects are off the clock, like rainy nights & cloudy days. #NationalPollinatorWeek
