It took me quite awhile before I settled on which microprocessor to use in my builds. I use the Adafruit Propmaker RP2040 Feather. It has two things that I was looking for: A NeoPixel Driver and an I2S Amplifier.

Vero board, with soldered on items and lots of wires. There is an ESP-32 processor on a break-out board. The background has a lit up 8x8 matrix Neopixel panel.

A wonky box, built of spare Lego parts. There is a 8x8 matrix Neopixel with some lit up LEDs on top, and a connected LED strip as well.

Success (well, 80%) with my first real soldering-required project!

I have a board with components that can power three (different) Neopixel shapes in a (prototype) Lego enclosure.

Im Bild die beleuchteten 3 Ebenen der Weihnachtspyramide aus Holz, ohne Drehachse, Kerzenhalter und Flügelrad, aber nun mit dem ebenfalls beleuchteten Kegelaufsatz

Soweit, so gut. Der Kegelaufsatz ist nun auch beleuchtet, die meisten Verbindungen verlegt.
Fehlt nur noch der #ESP32 in der Bodenplatte und dann kann ich die #Weihnachtspyramide einmal komplett aufbauen.

3. Ebene fertiggestellt und mit fliegender Verkabelung getestet. Mit nicht mal 150 mA ist das auch noch im Rahmen als Dauerverbraucher, wobei ich den Programmcode später noch ein wenig ausbauen werde.

It’s also a great learning project if you’re trying to get to grips with things like microcontrollers and addressable LEDs in an educational context. We’d love to see the project taken a step further, perhaps with wirelessly-networked squares that can communicate and track the overall game state, or enable more advanced forms of play.
