Witbeen leads Netball Namibia’s ambitious project Juanitha Witbeen says becoming Netball Namibia’s substantive president is not about the position but making a difference to justify her election. She was elected president during Saturday’s annual general meeting at Otjiwarongo, where she saw off competition from Seu Gowases for the top seat by nine votes to four. The election was for the vacant presidency which Witbeen had assumed in an acting capacity following the exit of Rebekka Goagoses, who is now Africa Netball’s acting president, late last year. Witbeen’s term of office will run alongside that of the existing executive board until 2027. “Today is not about me, it is about every young girl that is out there that needs to take the court,” Witbeen said during her maiden speech as head of Netball Namibia. “The dream we all have, that is what is our goal. It is our dedication that we stand, that I stand here today, that we have coaches, volunteers, community-based and powerful sport entities that we need to lift.” The other executive board members are Conny Samaria, Seu Gowases, Esther Mbathera and Rauna Haulu, who are expected to drive netball’s ambition of professionalisation. To that end, a key stakeholders workshop was held prior to the election at Otjiwarongo, looking at aligning structures and policies with legal framework. “Netball Namibia has come a long way, but the journey is far from over. Together we continue to build a future where our players are not only celebrated of their talent, but empowered as leaders on and off the court,” Witbeen said of their mandate. “I stand here ready to serve, to listen and to lead integrally, transparently and with a vision. We will focus on strengthening our grassroots development, increasing the possibilities and we need to look for sponsorship for us to be able to succeed all our plans that we are going to embark in,” she continued. “To Netball Namibia executive, our regional bodies, our sponsors and all our players, supporters, I thank you for entrusting me to take up the space. “The pathway that has been placed for me to be able to unite us passionately for the one goal that we stand here, which is Netball Namibia, for our girls and boys.” The post Witbeen leads Netball Namibia’s ambitious project appeared first on The Namibian.

Netball Namibia hopes that planned stadiums will include netball courts Erasmus Shalihaxwe Former Netball Namibia president Rebecca Goagoses hopes the planned construction of sports stadiums in all 14 regions will include netball courts. This follows the announcement by Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, Sanet Steenkamp, that N$35 million has been allocated to build stadiums in each region during the 2025/26 financial year.  Steenkamp said the stadiums will meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) category two standards, and each will have 10,000 seats. Goagoses, who currently serves as acting Netball Africa president, has long raised concerns over the lack of proper netball courts in Namibia.  She urged the government and local authorities to make land available for netball courts to help grow the sport. She said she has been pushing for the upgrading of sports facilities across the country to ensure that all netball players can participate and show their talent. “This upgrade should include world-class standard facilities; we have to move away from providing netball courts with just lines and cement surfaces. Athletes must be protected from heat and unforced injuries. I’m very happy and excited about the announcement of the allocation of funds for infrastructure development in the hope that netball is included,” she said. She added that Netball Namibia is ready to assist with providing accurate court measurements and standards required by World Netball. “Indoor facilities should be equipped with sprung floors as required; it’s almost like you upgrade a stadium without grass to play on. From Africa’s perspective, we welcome this gesture and trust that Namibia will be hosting world-class netball events following up on the recent Africa championship hosted by Namibia in December 2024,” said Goagoses. The government also plans to start building and renovating seven CAF category three stadiums, each with 30,000 seats, in Oshakati, Rundu, Windhoek (Independence Stadium), Outapi, Swakopmund, Eenhana, and Keetmanshoop. The six CAF category two stadiums, each with 10 000 seats, will be built in Omuthiya, Mariental, Gobabis, Katima Mulilo, Otjiwarongo, and Nkurenkuru.

Netball Namibia pairs up with New Era Netball Namibia believes its partnership with the New Era Publication Corporation (NEPC) will elevate the sport in the country. The two entities yesterday signed an agreement in Windhoek which will see New Era becoming the MTC Namibia Netball Premiership’s official media partner for the upcoming season. This development is a shot in the arm for the sport which has ambitions of transforming its amateur setup to professional establishment, says Netball Namibia vice president Connie Samaria. “It’s great for us and our team. We are humbled to see that with the little we’ve been doing, we’ve been doing the right thing and that there are people out there that can see Netball is on the right track,” he says. The agreement centres around increased coverage of the 12-team premier league which starts in May, through dedicated editorial space on all New Era platforms and live streaming matches. “A lot of supporters of the participating clubs cannot make their way to support their teams during each and every round as they unfold,” Samaria says. “What this partnership really means is that all supporters, all netball lovers, would be able to follow top quality netball and know what’s going on with their team and support them using the digital platforms that this partnership would be bringing to the premiership,” he continues. “The league is responsible for ensuring that we market the league, we market the players, we make sure that we expose our teams and our players to the greater Namibian population as well as to those abroad. “Netball Namibia wants to express our sincere thanks and gratitude towards this partnership. We welcome it with open arms and we look forward to a productive, friendly, cordial working relationships as we embark upon the operationalisation of this memorandum of understanding.” This increase in visibility will allow Netball Namibia to attract investors and realise its target of becoming a professional code, says NEPC chief executive Christof Maletsky. “We believe that with this partnership, Netball Namibia, and especially the premiership, will reach areas far and wide, and not just confined to Namibia, but to the outside world,” Maletsky notes. “And that will give the necessary exposure so that we see more players being employed. We have seen some players being employed, some coaches being employed by some of the organisations, because of their skill.” Samaria says there are around 240 players and officials signed to the 12 premier league clubs at present. The clubs are able to offer incentives through a monthly grant from the league to enable them to participate and honour their activities. He is confident that these numbers will increase as the sport code continues to grow its footprint. He says it goes a long way in employment creation as a lot of the players are young. “It might not be at the level where we would want it to be, but for us, it’s that small stipend that a player or coach or team manager earns from this local club that makes a difference and moves us in the right direction.” The national sport body signalled its intention to professionalise by appointing a full-time secretary general in October last year. Sofia Simon’s appointment was made possible through the Namibian government’s Harambee Prosperity Plan II under goal four of the social progression pillar, which concerns improved access to quality education and sport administered under the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture.
