2/10 The deal, expected Thursday, is a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
Carney insists it will outline "necessary conditions" for federal support, not just a green light.
This includes tougher industrial carbon pricing and a commitment to the $16.5B #PathwaysAlliance #CarbonCapture project.
From the #oilsands industry, he would get an agreement from them to build the long marketed, but never built #PathwaysAlliance carbon capture and storage project. A project industry has been marketing to the public, investors and government for years but never invested in. 22/

Carney's comments come as he is in "constructive discussions" with Alberta Premier #DanielleSmith on a potential "grand bargain."
This deal would link Alberta's desire for a #pipeline to the B.C. coast with the completion of the #PathwaysAlliance #CarbonCapture project.

The #PathwaysAlliance wants a guaranteed ROI for investing in carbon capture and storage. Plus on going taxpayer subsidies to build and operate the system. Complicated negotiations, CCUS is expensive unproven, used to recover more oil! Doesn’t impact any emissions coming out of vehicle tailpipes!
Industry, Hodgson & Carney are using the same rhetoric. #CCUS is economically unproven & #PathwaysAlliance #PipeDream should NOT be subsidized! Where's the #CanadaStrong climate action plan we expect?

Wow, this is nuts. The Canadian federal government under Carney's leadership has apparently been duped by the "Pathways Project"- a plan to make "decarbonized bitumen". What is decarbonized bitumen, you may ask? Aside from imaginary? According to Alberta's clownshow of a premier Danielle Smith, it's as follows: - bitumen production emissions reduction (i.e. scope 1 emissions only) via - "carbon capture, utilization and storage" (of what? Post combustion from steam generation to run steam assisted gravity drainage? How? At what cost? And how do you "utilize" fossil CO2 emissions for anything and call it decarbonization, at least with a straight face?!) - using hydroelectric or small modular nuclear ultimately (i.e. pure distilled #hopium, because Alberta and Saskatchewan both have fossil-fueled electricity grids that would gobble up any hydroelectric power you sent them, and SMNRs are pure nonsense) - and then "direct air capture for the last mile"- to add stupid sauce on top of stupidity- with DAC serving its usual predatory delay function here
Here's the clip, where Alberta's clown premier starts talking: https://lnkd.in/gkNDC939 This isn't "decarbonized bitumen", at all. Not only is this pure fantasy- a #hopium induced fever dream, relying on imaginary future technologies with no path to economic reality- but the bitumen STILL ends up being fed to refineries which use it almost exclusively to produce fuels like diesel and jet fuel. This is a massive greenwash. It's using Trump's annexation and tariff threats to soften us up to accept more PUBLIC investment in new fossil fuel infrastructure which simply CANNOT live out its lifetime without leading to a massive overshoot of Canada's GHG emission reduction commitments. Remember when Canada bought a $10 billion pipeline expansion project? That ended up costing $34 billion and is still not being used to its full capacity? Yeah, expect more of that, in the name of "nation building". For this to be happening while smoke from wildfires in western Canada is already destroying air quality across much of the North American continent is, frankly, just disgusting.
Unreal, make the madness stop 🛑

Hello, #Alberta …? No doubt #PathwaysAlliance has oil to sell. Who is going to buy the oil in those new pipelines to tide water and for how long?
#PathwaysAlliance wants 70% of Proposed CCS Ft. MacMurray to Ft. Saskatchewan, pipeline estimated at $16B subsidized by you and me, plus a guaranteed ROI, on its investment! tldrify.com/1fub The #Alberta oil and gas industry has remarkably obfuscated on CCS from 15 years. Break Even… ?
“A common refrain from the sector has been that CCS is still a hard sell to shareholders, because it has high operational costs once installed, without on its own generating any revenues.”
No ROI for an unproven technology that’s a cost of doing business. #PathwaysAlliance wants you to pay for it .
Three days into 2025 #PathwaysAlliance CEOs had already received more pay than the median earner in Canada because of their obscene salaries.

The effectiveness of carbon capture and storage (CCS) in lowering greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is a topic of significant debate among experts, with varying perspectives and evidence. Support for CCS Some experts and studies suggest that CCS can be a valuable tool in reducing GHG emissions. For instance, the World Economic Forum highlights that CCS technology has the potential to capture and store significant amounts of CO2, with the global CCS market expected to grow rapidly. CCS is seen as crucial for reducing emissions from hard-to-abate industries, and it is projected that up to 10 GtCO2 could need to be removed annually by 2050 to meet climate goals1. The MIT Climate Portal notes that CCS projects typically target 90% efficiency in capturing CO2, although achieving higher efficiencies becomes increasingly expensive and energy-intensive4. Criticisms and Limitations Critics argue that CCS has several significant limitations. For example, despite decades of development, CCS has captured only a very small fraction of global emissions. In 2022, only 0.1% of CO2 was captured, and it is estimated that global uptake of CCS must expand 120 times by 2050 to meet net-zero targets12. The David Suzuki Foundation and a study by Mark Z. Jacobson at Stanford University point out that CCS is often used to extract more oil, thereby increasing overall emissions. Additionally, CCS is one of the most expensive ways to reduce emissions, often costing up to 10 times more than using renewable energy sources like wind and solar23. Jacobson's research also highlights that when considering upstream emissions, the actual efficiency of CCS is much lower than the commonly cited 85-90%. His study found that CCS equipment captured only 10-11% of the total CO2 equivalent emissions over 20 years, including upstream emissions3. Conclusion While there is some evidence supporting the potential of CCS to reduce GHG emissions, there are also significant criticisms and limitations. The consensus amo…
