A large fragment of an English pile carpet with the arms of the Boldero family of Bury St Edmunds and the date 1571. Its in Norwich at Strangers Hall.
The background design of the Norwuch carpet featuring a bound lattice with flower forms. The flower in question is the borage plant, symbolic of courage, which at the time was used as a medicine for depression and to fortify soldiers before battle.
It's interesting to compare it with this unique English pile carpet dated 1571.
