Dancing cranes
OS map showing district of Cranbrook in Ilford, London.
Thought I’d do a mini series on the crane for a bit, after yesterday’s offering. Bird place-name of the day 136 is CRANBROOK, not the one in Kent where my book #thecuckooslea begins, but in London. Hard to believe now! OE cran + burna. ‘Cranes’ stream’. #PlaceNames #birdsandplace #naturewriting

Perched great Tit

Back to birds. The sound of so many great tits in song this week it sounds like the air itself needs oiling made me think place-name of the day 134 should be TITLEY (Heref.) Possibly OE *titta + leah. ‘Tit wood/clearing’. #PlaceNames #birdsandplace #naturewriting

Marwick says what I expected - black land (same name in Walls and Sandwick). Walls Swartland was part of Greenquoy/North Seatter until the farm was divided between two brothers in 1800s. #Orkney #Placenames #NorthWallsAndBrims
…Swartland just above where the "Warebrack” comes in would have got it's name from just that "Swarts" being the name for the bigger Tangles that find there wae to the beaches following such heavy seas” Interested to know if this derivation is correct #Placenames #Orkney #2/2

Carnmoney comes from the Irish ‘Carn Monaidh’ meaning ‘cairn of the hill’. There was likely to have been a cairn - a stone pile marking a burial site - on the hilltop which could place human influence on Carnmoney Hill as far back as the Bronze Age, two thousand years ago. #placenames
