Couldn't agree more! Transparency about our #positionality is key to research integrity. Historically, claims of objectivity, particularly in quantitative research, have too often obscured the researcher’s role in legitimising particular perspectives. wonkhe.com/blogs/positi... #IOEIDL

Sharing an old post I wrote during my PhD when I was exploring Reflexive Thematic Analysis.
The reflexive process cannot be determined by an ethics board or reviewing committee - it is a journey..

...but because a failure to consider it sufficiently can have theoretical implications through positioning the researcher at a greater remove from the field site than they are. like, you become an element of the social world you're studying, you're not on the sidelines #reflexivity #positionality

Figure 1. Stephanie’s (Left) and April’s (Right) Paper Dolls From Initial Play.
This paper examines the ways that artful inquiry affords qualitative research students newly creative and embodied opportunities to understand and engage with subjectivity and bias—important concepts in the eld of qualitative inquiry. Moving beyond the inadequacy of traditional teaching practices, such as student-generated written sub- jectivity statements, we share here an artful methodological approach using paper dolls to disrupt conventional engagements with these concepts. Inspired by Donna Haraway’s emphasis on layer(ing)s of subjectivity and Karen Barad’s discussion of cutting together-apart as a creative process, we draw from collaging in/as research to offer this paper doll activity as a constructive and disruptive way to invite students to consider themselves as complex, messy, and inevitable aspects of the research process.
Check out "A Layering of Selves: Bias, Subjectivity, and Paper Dolls," a more #creative and #fun way for #qualitative #students to explore #subjectivity, #positionality, & #bias. FREE access:

True, it's tough to do/write about this topic. That's why we need so much #reflexivity to unpack #positionality and discomfort in the field. Thanks again for this contribution.
A screenshot of a text file. The contents of the text file are: - What kind of school did you go to growing up? What was school like for you? - What race or ethnicity are you? What cultures have been significant to you throughout your life? - How old are you? Does your age affect how people treat you? - What gender do you identify as? Is that the same as the gender you were assigned when you were born? - What is your sexuality? Is your sexuality important to you, or unimportant? - Do you have any disabilities or long-term conditions that affect how you do everyday things? Are they visible, or invisible? - Where did you grow up? How does that place feature in your life now? - What is your highest level of education? What did you gain from those experiences? - How long have you been in your current role? Does this affect how people treat you? - What class did you grew up as, and what class do you feel that you are now? How has your class affected you throughout your life? Having considered each of these aspects of your positionality, ask yourself: - Which of these identities and experiences do I bring to the classroom? - How do they shape my assumptions about teaching and the students I teach? - How do these identities and experiences affect how students interact with me and other students?
I've spent most of the day finishing up the latest version of our (Fiasco-like!) game to help teachers develop anti-racist pedagogies and practice.

Just in time for my defence in July, my third PhD article is now available #OA at Technology in Society: sciencedirect.com/science/arti.... Of my three PhD projects, this one was by far the most instructive & challenging. It taught me a lot about #positionality, #reflexivity & #Hawaiʻi.
The issue is not the reviewer’s request, but the system of knowledge production that requires us to ignore bias embedded w/in it. If done well by everyone, disclosing #positionality yields more honest #science. It acknowledges that science isn’t bias-free & unmasks potential sources of a priori bias.
Episode 1 of my podcast series on #positionality is out. It features @danaelkurd.bsky.social on navigating her identity as a Palestinian woman scholar researching #Palestine, the suspicion she faces related to this identity, and her thoughts on decolonizing science.
