Une accélération matérielle du ProRes RAW pour les PC, à travers Vulkan Apple propose une accélération matérielle liée à son codec ProRes depuis les puces M1 Pro et M2, mais c'est une solution évidemment liée aux puces maison. Les développeurs de FFmpeg (une sorte de couteau suisse du traitement audio et vidéo), eux, vont ajouter un décodage du ProRes RAW dans la version 8.0 — attendue ce mois-ci — en passant par une API courante, Vulkan. Le ProRes RAW est notoirement compliqué à décoder sans accélération, et Apple avait sorti en 2019 une carte dédiée uniquement à cet usage pour le Mac Pro 2019, vendue 2 300 €. L'accélération via Vulkan n'est probablement pas aussi efficace que la carte (qui permettait de décoder six flux 8K) mais elle permet tout de même de bonnes performances sur les cartes graphiques AMD ou Nvidia récentes (et haut de gamme), avec de 63 à 120 images/s sur un flux en 5,8K selon l'auteur du patch. La carte AfterBurner décodait le ProRes. Image Apple. SI l'annonce est intéressante, il y a deux points à vérifier. Le premier, c'est évidemment si cette intégration va bien être prise en charge par les logiciels de montage, le cas le plus évident pour l'utilisation du ProRes. Le second, c'est l'impact sur les performances du système : si le GPU est monopolisé pour effectuer du décodage, il n'est pas nécessairement apte à calculer d'autres effets ou à effectuer d'autres tâches à ce moment. L'arrivée du Mac Pro 2023 sonne le glas de la carte Afterburner
