The #RussellGroup cartel has an "informal" agreement amongst themselves to keep staff costs below a certain percentile level, but I cannot recall off the top of my head how its defined. It definitely won't make up for 2+ years of no tuition income growth during a double digit inflation spike.

TBC clear, this entire list has been what @ucu.org.uk union members & their elected leadership have been saying FOR YEARS now. But British media institutions invariably turn to a #RussellGroup VC or some Tory apparatchik ensconced in a "Think Tank" (ala #HEPI) for comment.

Another swarm plot, this time showing the size of unrestricted reserves relative to annual income. Most institutions sat about the "reasonable lowerbound" of 50% and a few had values above 200%, which is considered excess cash hoarding.

And those #UnrestrictedReserves certain folks liked to bang on about? Would it surprise you that there is a large range on this as well. Also, since these are scaled by total income, the extent of #RussellGroup institutions accumulated with is hidden.

We have no means to redistribute reserves!

6 pairs of violin dot plots (Russell Group in orange & non-RG members in blue) for each academic year. The median salary starts ~£37k and slowly increases to £42k, amounting to 13.5% cumulative growth over the 5 year span. The bulk width of the distribution remains about £10k, show a wide disparity amongst institutions during the same year. A reminder that the avg salary is effected by the distribution of staff job categories (tenured professors vs lecturers vs service staff). Also the London allowance. I expect some of these numbers would be squashed closer together if I could compute discretionary rather than gross income.

Here we see the increase in avg staff salary (*real* k£) for each individual institution from 2016-17 to 2021-22. Each year, there is the small bulk increase from national bargaining.
