Beyond the engine: How connectivity is redefining the automotive experience ## With the automotive industry advancing, software has become the new oil that powers vehicles, redefining its capabilities. Today, vehicles are no longer a mere means of transport but have evolved into moving IoT devices, effortlessly merging digital experiences with mechanical performance. This is redefining mobility and bringing in the era of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) that are smarter, safer, and more connected. They have progressed into ‘Mobile Living Spaces’ that can communicate with passengers, the environment, and the infrastructure. This digital revolution is transforming and reshaping both the in-vehicle as well as the overall driving experience. With an increase in software, connectivity, and digitalization in vehicles, cybersecurity is becoming a priority, demanding that automotive manufacturers adopt stringent measures to secure the car and to protect against possible loopholes and potential threats. ### **The rise of software-defined vehicles (SDVs)** In today’s connected world, vehicles have become a central part of the Internet of Things (IoT). SDVs, characterized by the decoupling of the software from the hardware, allow continuous deployment of features throughout a vehicle’s lifecycle. Over-the-air (OTA) updates enable the addition of new functionalities, very much like smartphones. They create opportunities for manufacturers to extend services and personalize experiences. As the industry moves towards Connected, Autonomous, Shared, and Electric (CASE) mobility, today’s cars already incorporate around 150 to 200 million lines of code, with forecasts predicting it to go up to 300 to 600 million lines by 2030. Therefore, software lies at the core of automotive advancements. With the incorporation of technology and software, cars have now become an extension of one’s personal space. The role of software in shaping the automotive experience is massive. As per the market research conducted by the CMI Team, the valuation of the global Automotive Electronics and Software Market is anticipated to reach around USD 519 billion by 2033. Previously, cars lost their value as soon as they left the dealership, but with the rollout of timely software updates that improve features and performance, their value rises over time. This has opened new revenue streams for the automotive manufacturers by providing connected car services that enhance the in-car experience, offering greater personalization. SDVs also have the potential to unlock possibilities for smarter mobility by enabling communication with the surroundings, thus helping to ease traffic, cut down congestion, and improve road safety. Therefore, software has become the main differentiator that influences people to buy vehicles. Earlier, upgrading the infotainment systems or telematics required the customer to go to the dealership for a manual software update. In contrast, SDVs allow critical updates like security patches, performance monitoring, and adjustments to core functions to be delivered over-the-air (OTA). This continuous flow of data from these vehicles gives real-time insights into performance, helping the manufacturers refine features and build stronger connections with customers. Additionally, they have the potential to significantly reduce the number of accidents on the road with the use of sensors, cameras, and other advanced technologies that help detect and avoid obstacles. Software-defined vehicles also contribute to the advancement of sustainable mobility as the software-centric architecture enables precise optimization of energy consumption and overall performance. This helps further in reducing fuel usage and minimizing emissions. SDVs can also be effectively integrated with public transportation systems and ride-sharing platforms, therefore, creating a more efficient, connected, and environmentally conscious mobility ecosystem. ### **Connectivity in modern vehicles** Today’s vehicles can endlessly exchange data with various external entities, including other vehicles (V2V), infrastructure (V2I), and wider networks (V2X). This interconnectivity, while it improves functionality, also increases risk factors, potentially leading to accidents. Therefore, it is important to safeguard all communication networks with robust encryption and authentication protocols. The protection of sensitive data of the passengers from unauthorized access is very important. The rise of electronic components in vehicles that manage everything from braking and steering to infotainment and safety systems makes vehicles more prone to risk. According to the analysis conducted by Upstream Security, 148 security incidents have been reported in the first few months of 2025, indicating an accelerating rate of cyber threats to vehicles and their manufacturers. According to the Threat Landscape Report by CloudSEK, India emerged as the second most targeted nation in terms of cyberattacks in the world in 2024. This highlights the importance of the implementation of cybersecurity from the ground up. Attacks on vehicles can compromise driver privacy, influence critical systems, and even disrupt traffic. ### **Building cybersecurity into the core** Cybersecurity is no longer just an afterthought for automakers but must be designed into vehicle architecture. Be it protected hardware, intelligent intrusion detection systems, encrypted communication layers, or software to adapt and patch in real time. For live monitoring, anomaly detection, and immediate threat response, Security Operation Centers (SOCs) dedicated to vehicle networks are key. Today’s vehicles must be a fortress, always alert, yet silent while protecting. Cybersecurity functions must operate silently yet effectively in the background, invisible to the driver, just like other safety features. It is no longer about showcasing complex features but about intelligently integrating them without saddling the consumers. The automotive industry must therefore adopt a cybersecurity strategy that is multi-layered, encompassing prevention, detection, and response. ### **AI and cybersecurity** ML and AI are essential elements in SDVs as they allow autonomous driving, predictive maintenance, and services that are context-aware. But with AI, the cybersecurity landscape is also under threat from crimes that can exploit its systems and bypass traditional security. Thus, automotive cybersecurity strategies must evolve alongside AI. AI-driven defense systems with capabilities to detect irregularities, separate compromised components, and reroute data streams in real time are the real solution. These systems can learn from past attacks and adapt to them at machine speed. They can thus transform cybersecurity from reactive to proactive. ### **Trust serves as the ultimate differentiator** With digitization, consumers expect transparency in how data is collected and used, the ability to control access permissions, and real-time alerts on updates. This entails that the automotive manufacturers adhere to regulatory compliance but also bypass it through innovation. Consent-based data sharing, anonymization protocols, and end-to-end encryption are now vital features. Manufacturers can today create vehicles that update and defend themselves, and also communicate seamlessly with the environment, without compromising the consumer’s experience. ### **Cybersecurity throughout the vehicle lifecycle** **Prashanth Doreswamy, President and CEO, Continental India** Vehicle security against cyber threats involves a holistic approach that spans development, deployment, and ongoing maintenance. Some industry players, such as Continental, have focused on implementing cybersecurity through prevention and quick response strategies. The company understands the future needs and demands of the market; thus, it has been focusing on developing advanced cybersecurity solutions. Frameworks such as CAEdge aim to accelerate the development of automated driving systems, enhance collaboration, and safeguard information, all while enabling faster, safer software deployment. Additionally, Continental has dedicated teams that work on innovative security measures. As the automotive industry moves towards a connected and software-defined future, innovation must go hand in hand with safety. Cybersecurity is no longer just a technical necessity but has become central to building trust. In a future where vehicles operate autonomously, they must also be equipped to defend themselves.
